Study Summary

This trial is testing whether a different medication, dutasteride, may be more effective than the current medication, finasteride, in decreasing prostate volume, improving symptoms, and reducing urine retention.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for men aged 50-80 with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) who have been on finasteride for at least a year. Participants must be willing to undergo all required tests over a 12-month period, including two blood draws and transrectal ultrasounds of the prostate (TRUSP). Men with a history of not taking medication as prescribed or unwillingness to tolerate these procedures cannot join.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study is testing if Dutasteride is more effective than Finasteride in reducing prostate size and improving symptoms based on the International Prostate Symptom Score. It also looks at lowering post-void residual urine volume. The hypothesis suggests Dutasteride could be better because it blocks both types of an enzyme linked to BPH, compared to Finasteride's action on only one type.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Potential side effects may include sexual dysfunction, such as decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, or ejaculation disorders; breast tenderness or enlargement; dizziness; and allergic reactions like rash, itching, hives, or swelling.
