Study Summary

This trial will adapt Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to better meet the needs of stroke survivors with aphasia by incorporating communication supports and compensatory speech-language treatment in order to improve communication participation, psychosocial adjustment, and quality of life.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for adults over 18 who have aphasia after a stroke in the left side of their brain. It's not suitable for those with other neurological diseases, severe language comprehension issues, significant memory problems, uncontrolled substance dependence, or serious mood or behavioral disorders needing specialized treatment.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study tests a tailored Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) called 'ACT for Aphasia', designed to help improve communication skills, psychosocial adjustment, and life quality in stroke survivors with aphasia. The therapy will be refined through survivor feedback across two cohorts.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
As this is a psychological/behavioral intervention focusing on therapy rather than medication, traditional physical side effects are not expected. However, participants may experience emotional discomfort as they engage with the therapeutic process.
