Study Summary

This trial found that standard sutures are better than both tissue adhesive and absorbable sutures for closing low tension facial, neck, and shoulder wounds in children and adolescents, in terms of cosmetic outcome, complication rate, and parental satisfaction.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for children and adolescents up to 18 years old who need surgery at Children's Hospital San Diego for a cyst or pilomatrixoma on the neck, face, or shoulder. It excludes those with infected lesions, immune deficiencies, allergies to specific adhesives, diabetes requiring insulin, clotting disorders, or wounds in hairy areas.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study aims to compare three methods of closing surgical wounds: tissue adhesive (2-octyl cyanoacrylate), absorbable sutures, and non-absorbable sutures. The focus is on cosmetic outcomes, complication rates and parental satisfaction after low-tension wound closures.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Possible side effects may include allergic reactions to the tissue adhesive if there's sensitivity to its components like cyanoacrylate or formaldehyde. There could also be complications related to wound healing depending on the closure method used.
