SIL Trial Summary

This trial seeks to combat social isolation & loneliness in older adults using intergenerational peer support, while comparing it to same-generation peer support. Volunteers recruited from hospital staff. Results will help improve quality of life & reduce mortality.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for community-dwelling individuals aged 70 or older who have visited the emergency department, family medicine, or geriatric clinics at participating sites. They must feel lonely as measured by a specific score and be able to communicate without assistance. Those with severe cognitive issues, living in nursing homes, or without phone access cannot join.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study tests two programs aimed at reducing loneliness in older adults: 'Intergenerational HOW R U?' which pairs them with younger volunteers, and 'Same-Generation Peer Support HOW R U?' using peers of similar age. The effectiveness of these interventions compared to waiting for support will be evaluated.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Since this trial involves social interventions rather than medical treatments, there are no direct physical side effects. However, participants may experience emotional discomfort if they do not respond well to the social interaction provided by the program.
