Study Summary

This trial assesses an online treatment to help people with chronic cough that doesn't respond to traditional treatments. Participants will use online treatments and apps to monitor their cough.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for people in Montana with a chronic cough lasting at least eight weeks, triggered by stimuli like cold air or strong smells. Participants must be able to use a computer or smartphone, have internet access, and not be current smokers. They should have had unremarkable physical evaluations and chest x-rays, and cannot be on certain medications like ACE inhibitors or neuromodulators.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study tests an Internet-based behavioral therapy (iBCST) against a sham treatment to see if it helps suppress chronic coughs. It's randomized and placebo-controlled; participants will also use the Hyfe app to monitor their cough frequency and some will participate in interviews.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Since this is a behavioral intervention using internet resources rather than medication, there are no direct side effects as one would expect from drugs. However, participants may experience frustration or lack of improvement if the therapy proves ineffective.

Placebo Group
Group I: Internet-Behavioral Cough Suppression TherapyExperimental Treatment1 Intervention
Participants will watch treatment-specific educational and training videos and perform the training exercises as recommended. There are a total of five videos ranging from 2-5 minutes in length. Participants will be asked to watch the videos at least once weekly. Daily training exercises will be discussed in the videos and should take no more than a few minutes to complete every day. All exercises are non-invasive and are not physically demanding. Each week participants will complete a progress check question that will take less than one minute to answer, indicating whether they are watching the videos and completing the exercises as recommended.
