Patient Q&A Section

How many people get dry skin a year in the United States?

"Around 1.7 million US Americans experience severe or disabling cases of dry skin. In contrast with the USA population in general, Blacks are more likely to experience dry skin. [The guideline of the European Academy of Dermatology] states that [good lifestyle choices] are important and that is what is most rewarding to patients. What are the signs of dry skin?

"Approximately 15% of adults report dry skin. The most common symptoms are itching and cracking or flaking of the skin. Other symptoms can include redness, scaly skin, chapped and scaly lips, and a dry nose bridge, but are generally not present for long periods. As the dryness increases, so does the burning and tingling sensations. Symptoms of dry skin can be treated by using moisturizers like salicylic acid or retinol creams applied daily. However, some individuals use topical corticosteroids, which may be effective in long term, or long acting topical corticosteroids taken daily for long periods of time during the summer and fall months." - Anonymous Online Contributor

What causes dry skin?

"Causes of dry skin can be categorised into three broad groups: physiological, psychosocial and disease. Most causes are physiological and/or chronic. We propose the term "atopic dermatitis syndrome" to recognise that dry skin has several possible causes and that their interactions are complex and many factors can contribute, so cure is not necessarily inevitable." - Anonymous Online Contributor

Can dry skin be cured?

"Findings from a recent study, the cure rate in two groups of patients was statistically significantly lower after only the use of topical retinol compared with no treatment. There was no statistical correlation between clinical parameters and the improvement of dry skin." - Anonymous Online Contributor

What is the primary cause of dry skin?

"Of 584 patients with symptomatic skin dryness the most frequent cause (26.9%) was autoimmune. Of 355 patients with dry skin by phototesting, most of these cases were primary, (80.2%). Of patients who had a positive photopatch, the most common diagnoses were mild to moderate atopic dermatitis (37.0%), irritant contact dermatitis (29.5%), eczema fulminans (14.8%), and atopic dermatitis (7.5%). Photoprotective use by the patients was fairly uncommon, only 37.3% prescribed a sunblock, and sun protective clothing was seldom recommended." - Anonymous Online Contributor

Who should consider clinical trials for dry skin?

"Patient and clinician preferences, and evidence from recent trials, suggest that patients with dry skin may be more favorable to clinical trials. Patient preferences were driven by an assumption that dry skin is a marker for the underlying condition.
