Study Summary

This trial will test which way of teaching medical students (lecture before simulation or simulation before lecture) is more effective for knowledge and performance retention.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for second-year medical students at the University of British Columbia. There are no specific exclusion criteria, so all such students can participate to see how different teaching orders affect their learning.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study is testing whether doing a simulation before a lecture or vice versa leads to better knowledge and skill retention in pediatric status epilepticus. Students will be randomly placed into groups with reversed orders of simulation and lectures.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Since this trial involves educational methods rather than medical treatments, there aren't any physical side effects. However, participants may experience varying levels of stress or anxiety due to the nature of simulations and tests.

Follow Up ~single time metric completed five minutes after initial simulation session
This trial's timeline: 3 weeks for screening, Varies for treatment, and single time metric completed five minutes after initial simulation session for reporting.

Study Objectives

Outcome measures can provide a clearer picture of what you can expect from a treatment.
Primary outcome measures
Change from baseline in resuscitation performance retention score 2 months post-initial training assessed using global simulation performance score
Secondary outcome measures
Change in knowledge assessment score at 2 months post-initial training assessed using an MCQ
Learner satisfaction measured by Likert scale items after each simulation debrief
Time to resuscitation metrics

Group I: Simulation - Didactic Lecture GroupExperimental Treatment2 Interventions
This group will start with a Simulation and debrief followed by a didactic lecture afterwards. They will then complete a simulation 2 months later.
Group II: Didactic Lecture - Simulation GroupExperimental Treatment2 Interventions
This group will start with a didactic lecture and then complete a simulation and debrief. They will then complete a simulation 2 months later.
