CARE Trial Summary

This trial is testing a new approach to talking to patients about heart disease and health behaviors in order to see if it impacts how patients feel and behave.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for Veterans with heart disease who smoke or drink hazardously. They must be attending a primary care appointment soon, have moderate intentions to change their behavior, and consistently report smoking or hazardous drinking. Those with severe mental impairment, non-English speakers, or non-Veterans are excluded.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study tests a new approach where a Health Educator extends the patient's primary care visit by about 5 minutes to discuss heart health and behaviors versus just the standard care. Participants will also have follow-up calls and access to an optional health-tracking app.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Since this intervention involves counseling rather than medication, typical medical side effects aren't expected. However, participants may experience emotional discomfort discussing personal habits like smoking and drinking.
