PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of liposomal cytarabine in treating young patients who have recurrent or refractory meningeal leukemia, lymphoma, or solid tumors.

This study is evaluating whether a drug can stop cancer cells from dividing.

I haven't had cancer in the last 5 years, except for skin cancer.

My cancer has returned or is not responding to treatment and has spread to the lining of my brain or spinal cord.

My kidney function is good, with creatinine below 1.5 mg/dL.

My liver function tests are within normal limits.

I have had a condition where my lymphocytes grow abnormally.

I am not pregnant or nursing, use birth control, and don't have uncontrolled illnesses except HIV.

I am able to get out of my bed or chair and move around.

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage tumor cells. Peripheral stem cell transplantation may allow the doctor to give higher doses of chemotherapy and kill more tumor cells. It is not yet known if combination chemotherapy is more effective with or without radiation therapy and/or surgery in treating Ewing's sarcoma.

PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying different combination chemotherapy regimens to see how well they work when given with or without peripheral stem cell transplantation, radiation therapy, and/or surgery in treating patients with Ewing's sarcoma.

This study is evaluating whether a combination of chemotherapy and radiation therapy is more effective than chemotherapy alone in treating Ewing's sarcoma.

My cancer is a type of Ewing's sarcoma or related.

My disease is either operable, was operated on, needs or doesn’t need immediate radiotherapy, has spread to lungs/pleura or beyond, and it’s been less than 45 days since my definitive biopsy.

My kidney function is normal, with a filtration rate of 60 mL/min or more.

My heart functions normally, with good pumping ability.

I don't have any health or social issues that would stop me from joining the study.

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. It is not yet known if paclitaxel is more effective with or without carboplatin in treating stage IV breast cancer.

PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of paclitaxel with or without carboplatin in treating women who have stage IV breast cancer.

I am not currently responding to hormone therapy.

My condition worsened after initially responding to hormone therapy.

My breast cancer diagnosis was confirmed through lab tests.

My liver tests are within the required range.

My kidney function is within the required range and my calcium levels are not too high.

My heart is generally healthy with no recent major issues.

My brain cancer has not worsened and I've finished radiation therapy at least 4 weeks ago.

I do not have severe numbness or pain in my hands or feet.

I don't have any serious health issues that would stop me from joining the study.

My cancer's hormone receptor status is not determined.

I am not currently on any cancer immunotherapy treatments.

I am not receiving any radiotherapy, except for pain relief in bones.

My cancer is not HER2 positive or its HER2 status is unknown.

I have never been treated with Herceptin.

I have not had chemotherapy for breast cancer that has spread.

It has been over 6 months since my last pre-surgery treatment.

My condition is at stage IV, indicating it has spread to other parts of my body.

It has been over 3 weeks since my last radiotherapy (or 4 weeks for brain treatment).

I am not taking any other cancer treatments.

It has been over 3 weeks since my last major surgery.

I am not currently taking any cancer hormone treatments.

I haven't had radiation on 30% or more of my bone marrow.

My cancer spots in previously treated areas can't be used to measure my disease.

I have not had a cancer relapse within 6 months after my bone marrow transplant.

I have not had a bone marrow or stem cell transplant.

My brain and spinal cord are free from cancer, or I meet specific conditions if they are not.

My lymphoma is aggressive and not responding to treatment, and I need chemotherapy.

My blood counts meet the required levels.

My heart health meets the study requirements.

I do not have any serious infections right now.

My liver function meets the required standards.

My kidney function is within the required range.

I have no other cancer except for certain allowed types.

My previous cancer treatment didn't work, or my cancer returned within 6 months.

BAY 59-8862

RATIONALE: Estrogen can stimulate the growth of breast tumor cells. Ovarian function suppression combined with hormone therapy using tamoxifen or exemestane may fight breast cancer by reducing the production of estrogen. It is not yet known whether suppression of ovarian function plus either tamoxifen or exemestane is more effective than tamoxifen alone in preventing the recurrence of hormone-responsive breast cancer.

PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial studies ovarian suppression with either tamoxifen or exemestane to see how well they work compared to tamoxifen alone in treating premenopausal women who have undergone surgery for hormone-responsive breast cancer.

My breast cancer was confirmed by a biopsy and is hormone receptor positive.

I became postmenopausal after surgery or chemotherapy.

I am not pregnant or breastfeeding and do not plan to become pregnant in the next 5 years.

I was on tamoxifen or similar hormone therapy within a year before my breast cancer diagnosis.

My estrogen levels are in the premenopausal range.

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as paclitaxel, oxaliplatin, leucovorin and 5-fluoruracil, work in different ways separately and in combination to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. The use of metronomic dosing of chemotherapy minimizes side effects and increases efficacy by anti-angiogenic effects. The pilot study demonstrated promising responses in all patients. It is not yet known how effective this drug and dosing combination is in treating advanced pancreatic cancer.

PURPOSE: This non-randomized phase II trial is studying giving weekly doses of paclitaxel, oxaliplatin, leucovorin and 5-fluorouracil together as second or third-line therapy in treating patient with locally advanced unresectable or metastatic adenocarcinoma of the pancreas following demonstrated progression after first-line gemcitabine.

This randomized phase III trial studies chemotherapy and bevacizumab to see how well they work compared to chemotherapy alone in treating patients with stage IB, stage II, or stage IIIA non-small cell lung cancer that was removed by surgery. Drugs used in chemotherapy work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells, by stopping them from dividing, or by stopping them from spreading. Giving more than one drug (combination chemotherapy) may kill more tumor cells. Monoclonal antibodies, such as bevacizumab, may interfere with the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. Bevacizumab also may stop the growth of non-small cell lung cancer by blocking the growth of new blood vessels necessary for tumor growth. It is not yet known whether chemotherapy is more effective with or without bevacizumab in treating non-small cell lung cancer.

This study is evaluating whether chemotherapy and bevacizumab are more effective than chemotherapy alone in treating patients with stage IB, stage II, or stage IIIA non-small cell lung cancer that was removed by surgery.

Your SGPT (ALT) level in the blood is less than 5 times the upper limit of normal.

I had surgery to remove my lung cancer, which was not a minor procedure, and had specific lymph nodes checked.

Your total bilirubin level must be less than or equal to 1.5 mg/dL.

I haven't had hormone or radiation cancer treatments in the last 5 years.

Your prothrombin time/international normalized ratio (INR) should be 1.5 or less.

My blood clotting time is within the normal range, or if I'm on blood thinners, it's not more than 1.5 times the upper limit.

I am not currently coughing up a significant amount of bright red blood.

I have had heart issues but have been symptom-free for over a year.

You must have a certain amount of a type of white blood cell called neutrophils in your blood.

Women who could become pregnant must take a blood or urine test to make sure they are not pregnant before joining the study.

I haven't had any cancer in the last 5 years, except for cervical in-situ carcinoma or non-melanoma skin cancer that was fully removed.

My blood pressure is under control and below 150/90.

I am on a stable blood thinner regimen or using it for DVT prevention.

I am taking aspirin or NSAIDs daily, but not dipyridamole, ticlopine, clopidogrel, or cilostazol.

I am eligible for pemetrexed/cisplatin therapy.

My lung cancer is not of the squamous cell type.

My kidney function is good, as shown by recent tests.

My blood clotting time is within safe limits while on blood thinners.

Your SGOT (AST) levels are not more than 5 times the upper limit of normal.

I had lung surgery between 6 to 12 weeks ago and have recovered well.

Your kidney function, as measured by a blood test for creatinine, is within a certain range.

I haven't had any major abdominal issues like a fistula, perforation, or abscess in the last month.

I am not expecting to undergo any major surgeries during the study.

I am fully active or restricted in physically strenuous activity but can do light work.

I have never had a stroke or a mini-stroke.

My urine protein levels are low enough for me to join.

I have never had chemotherapy, except possibly low-dose methotrexate for a non-cancer condition.

I haven't had major surgery, serious injuries, or biopsies recently.

I don't have any serious infections, heart issues, or other conditions that would stop me from following the study's requirements.

You are allergic to Chinese hamster ovary cell products or other similar medicines made from living cells.

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as docetaxel, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Androgens can cause the growth of prostate cancer cells. Antihormone therapy, such as goserelin and leuprolide, may stop the adrenal glands from making androgens. Giving docetaxel and leuprolide or goserelin before surgery may make the tumor smaller and reduce the amount of normal tissue that needs to be removed. It is not yet known whether giving docetaxel and leuprolide or goserelin before surgery is more effective than surgery alone in treating patients with prostate cancer.

PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying docetaxel and leuprolide or goserelin to see how well they work when given before surgery compared with surgery alone in treating patients with high-risk localized prostate cancer.
