RATIONALE: Hyperthermia therapy kills tumor cells by heating them to several degrees above body temperature. Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining chemotherapy with hyperthermia may kill more tumor cells.

PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well giving fluorouracil and liposomal doxorubicin together with systemic hyperthermia works in treating patients with metastatic breast, ovarian, endometrial, or cervical cancer.

This study is evaluating whether a combination of chemotherapy and hyperthermia is more effective than chemotherapy alone in treating patients with metastatic breast, ovarian, endometrial, or cervical cancer.

My lung function is good, and I have no history of lung or heart disease.

My liver functions are within normal limits.

I don't have seizures or brain disorders, and my brain scan is clear.

Less than 80% of my liver is affected by disease.

I can take care of myself and am up more than 50% of my waking hours.

I have never had a lymphoproliferative disorder.

I have a confirmed diagnosis of advanced cancer in the breast, ovary, uterus, or cervix.

I haven't had any cancer, except for skin cancer, in the last 5 years.

Less than 30% of my lungs are affected by the disease.

I am currently taking heart or blood thinning medications.

My kidney function tests are within the required range.

My kidney function is reduced with a creatinine clearance below 45 mL/min.

I have seizures or other brain disorders.

I have a history of heart or lung disease.

My heart is healthy with no history of heart attacks or unstable blood pressure.

I do not have diabetes or any serious illness.

I haven't had cancer in the last 5 years, except for skin cancer.

I have had a condition where my lymphocytes grow abnormally.

I haven't had any other cancer except for certain skin cancers or treated cervical/uterine cancer in the last 5 years.

I have not been treated with mouse antibodies, except for technetium Tc 99m LL2.

My lymphoma is a type of B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

I can take care of myself and perform daily activities.

RATIONALE: Diagnostic imaging procedures, such as radiolabeled monoclonal antibodies, may improve the ability to detect the residual disease in patients who have been treated for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

This study is evaluating whether diagnostic imaging procedures can improve the ability to detect residual disease in patients who have been treated for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

I have B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma treated but still have some remaining disease.

I am able to get out of my bed or chair and move around.

I haven't had any cancer other than certain skin cancers or treated cervical/uterine cancer in the last 5 years.

Monoclonal Antibodies

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Interferon alfa may interfere with the growth of cancer cells. Hyperthermia therapy kills tumor cells by heating them to several degrees above body temperature. Combining hyperthermia with chemotherapy and interferon alfa may kill more tumor cells.

PURPOSE: This phase I/II trial is studying the side effects of cisplatin, gemcitabine, interferon alfa, and whole-body hyperthermia and how well they work in treating patients with metastatic, recurrent, or refractory cancer.

My lung function is mostly normal, with no severe lung disease.

My kidney function tests are within normal limits.

I do not have brain metastases or CNS disorders.

My liver function tests are within normal limits.

My cancer has spread, come back, or is not responding to treatment.

It has been over 6 days since my major chest or belly surgery.

I can care for myself but may not be able to do active work.

My blood cell counts are within a healthy range and I don't have bleeding disorders.

I am not taking heart medications, blood thinners, steroids, or aspirin.

I don't have any other illnesses that would stop me from following treatment.

My heart is healthy with no history of major heart issues.

We hypothesize that ingested human recombinant interferon-alpha (hrIFN-a) will prolong the "honeymoon" period and enhance B cell survival in type 1 diabetes in a phase II randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trial. We have demonstrated that ingested IFN-a prevents type 1 diabetes in the NOD mouse, prolongs the "honeymoon" period in newly diagnosed type 1 diabetics, and delays murine islet allograft rejection. The natural history of type 1 diabetes is unique for a phase frequently referred as the "honeymoon," a period in which the insulin need becomes minimal and glycemic control improves. The B cell (the insulin producing cell) partially recovers. However, as with all honeymoons, they end and the patient becomes completely insulin-deficient. The general consensus of the international diabetes community is to test potential preventive therapies for type 1 diabetes in newly diagnosed patients. Prolongation of the honeymoon as the reversal of the disease is considered a positive result.

In this phase II randomized, double-blind, parallel-design clinical trial we will determine whether ingested (oral) human recombinant IFN-a will prolong the "honeymoon" period and increase counterregulatory anti-inflammatory cytokine(s).

We will determine the safety and efficacy of 30,000 units ingested hrIFN-a vs placebo in eighty patients with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes in a phase II trial for one year. Primary outcome measures will be a 30% increase in C-peptide levels released after Sustacal stimulation at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after entry. Secondary outcome will be decreasing titers of islet cell antibodies (ICA). If successful, a larger and longer phase III trial of prevention of type 1 diabetes in high risk patients will be undertaken. We will also determine if ingested hrIFN-a increases IL-4, IL-10 or IFN-a production in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PMNC) from patients with recent onset type 1 diabetes.

I am either younger than 3 years old or older than 25 years old.

I am a young person with type 1 diabetes.

I do not have a history of alcoholism, kidney, heart, lung diseases, or intellectual impairments that would prevent me from understanding or participating in the study.

I am not taking any immune system affecting drugs like azathioprine or vitamin E.

I have abnormal white blood cell counts or am on liver-affecting medication.

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes within the last month.

This study is evaluating whether a combination of two drugs can reduce the amount of HIV in the blood.

I haven't had radiation, chemotherapy, or immune-affecting drugs in the last 4 weeks.

I have not had an HIV vaccine in the last 3 months nor plan to during the study.

I am committed to completing the study and taking the drugs as required.

If I am under 18, my parent or guardian has agreed to the treatment.

I have a stomach or intestine problem that affects how I absorb medicine.

I am not allergic to the study drugs or their ingredients.

I have been on anti-HIV medication for at least 2 weeks.

I have had hepatitis in the last 6 months.

I have taken medication for HIV that is not a nucleoside.

I am not taking astemizole, cisapride, midazolam, triazolam, or ergot derivatives.

Abacavir/Lamivudine/Zidovudine

In this phase I-II parallel design, randomized, double-blind clinical trial we will determine if 3,000 or 30,000 units ingested hrIFN-a prevents deterioration of cognitive functioning in patients with dementia of Alzheimer's type (AD) and whether ingested hrIFN-a treatment decreases acute phase reactants and pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6 in mild to moderate AD. We predict that the novel anti-inflammatory agent ingested human recombinant interferon alpha (hrIFN-a) will modulate inflammation and inhibit the natural history of AD progression. If you are eligible, you will receive Aricept for 5 weeks (donezepil) and thereafter in addition to Aricept either placebo (inactive substance) or interferon alpha at 3,000 or 30,000 units every day for 12 months.

Prevention of Cognitive Decline in Alzheimer's Disease by Ingested Interferon Alpha

I don't have medical conditions like B12 deficiency or untreated thyroid issues that could cause dementia.

I have a blood or cancer disorder other than skin cancer.

I do not have Parkinson's, hydrocephalus, stroke-related dementia, or unexplained seizures.

I haven't had a heart attack, heart failure, or heart surgery in the last 3 months.

I have had a stroke or more than one mini-stroke.

I do not have any serious or unstable stomach, liver, or lung diseases.

I am 50 or older and have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's for at least a year.

Aricept

Ingested Interferon Alpha

The primary purpose of the study is to determine the efficacy of an investigational therapy called DCVax(R)-L in patients with newly diagnosed GBM for whom surgery is indicated. Patients must enter screening at a participating site prior to surgical resection of the tumor. Patients will receive the standard of care, including radiation and Temodar therapy and two out of three will additionally receive DCVax-L, with the remaining one third receiving a placebo. All patients will have the option to receive DCVax-L in a crossover arm upon documented disease progression. (note: DCVax-L when used for patients with brain cancer is sometimes also referred to as DCVax-Brain)

This study is evaluating whether a vaccine can improve survival for people with brain cancer.

I stopped taking steroids at least 10 days before my leukapheresis.

My initial treatment was surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible, followed by radiation and Temodar chemotherapy.

I agree not to receive certain cancer treatments except for temozolomide as per the Stupp Protocol while on DCVax-L.

My tumor sample from surgery is enough for the protein test.

I have enough DCVax-L available for treatment after it was made.

I have been diagnosed with Grade IV brain cancer in one side of my brain.

My bone marrow, liver, and kidneys are working well.

I am between 18 and 70 years old and can legally consent.

My cancer did not worsen after finishing radiation therapy.

DCVax®-L

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as cisplatin and gemcitabine, work in different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Giving low-dose interferon alfa on a metronomic (regularly timed) schedule may stop the growth of cancer by stopping blood flow to the tumor. Fever-range (above 101° F) whole-body hyperthermia kills tumor cells by heating them to several degrees above normal body temperature. Combining cisplatin, gemcitabine, and low-dose interferon alfa with fever-range whole-body hyperthermia may kill more tumor cells.

PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well giving cisplatin, gemcitabine, and metronomic low-dose interferon alfa together with fever-range whole-body hyperthermia works in treating patients with inoperable or metastatic pancreatic cancer.

This study is evaluating whether a combination of drugs and fever-range whole-body hyperthermia is more effective than the drugs alone in treating people with pancreatic cancer.

My blood counts are within the required ranges and I don't have serious blood clotting issues.

I have no seizures, CNS disorders, history of malignant hyperthermia, insulin-dependent diabetes, significant emotional instability, other major medical issues preventing hyperthermia treatment, and I am not HIV positive or pregnant/nursing.

I am currently taking adrenal corticosteroids.

I had radiotherapy less than 3 weeks ago.

I have previously been treated with cisplatin or gemcitabine.

My liver is enlarged due to cancer and can be felt extending more than 15 cm below my rib cage.

My heart is healthy based on recent tests and I haven't had a heart attack in the last 6 months.

I had major chest or belly surgery less than a week ago.

I am currently taking medication for heart conditions or blood clots.

My cancer diagnosis is confirmed to be pancreatic.

My condition cannot be treated with surgery and may have spread.

I am mostly able to care for myself and carry out daily activities.

My lung function tests are within normal ranges.

Fever-Range Whole-Body Hyperthermia

Metronomic Low-Dose Interferon Alfa

This randomized phase III trial studies lenalidomide to see how well it works compared to a placebo in treating patients with multiple myeloma who are undergoing autologous stem cell transplant. Giving chemotherapy before a peripheral blood stem cell transplant helps kill any cancer cells that are in the body and helps make room in the patient's bone marrow for new blood-forming cells (stem cells) to grow. After treatment, stem cells are collected from the patient's blood and stored. More chemotherapy is then given to prepare the bone marrow for the stem cell transplant. The stem cells are then returned to the patient to replace the blood-forming cells that were destroyed by the chemotherapy. Biological therapies, such as lenalidomide, may stimulate or suppress the immune system in different ways and stop cancer cells from growing. Giving lenalidomide after autologous stem cell transplant may be an effective treatment for multiple myeloma.

This study is evaluating whether lenalidomide might be an effective treatment for multiple myeloma.

I am fully active or restricted in physically strenuous activity but can do light work.

My lungs work well enough to breathe without symptoms.

My multiple myeloma is active and needs treatment, and I've responded to initial therapy.

I started my first cancer treatment less than a year ago.

I have collected the required number of stem cells for my treatment.

My cancer did not worsen after my first treatment, and I've had no more than two treatment plans.

I am not pregnant or nursing and will follow strict birth control measures if of childbearing age.

I have not had any blood, bone marrow, or organ transplant.

I do not have any serious infections right now.

My heart pumps well, with an ejection fraction of 40% or higher.

I have had less than a year of treatment, including specific medications.

Lenalidomide

This randomized phase III trial studies oxaliplatin, leucovorin calcium, fluorouracil, and bevacizumab to see how well they work compared to oxaliplatin, leucovorin calcium, and fluorouracil in treating patients who have undergone surgery for stage II colon cancer. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as oxaliplatin, leucovorin calcium, and fluorouracil, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells, by stopping them from dividing, or by stopping them from spreading. Monoclonal antibodies, such as bevacizumab, may interfere with the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. It is not yet known whether giving combination chemotherapy together with bevacizumab is more effective than combination chemotherapy alone in treating colon cancer.

I have had a condition where my lymphocytes multiply unusually.

I have a tumor sample available for specific genetic testing.

I have not had a heart attack or unstable angina in the last year.

I have symptoms related to poor blood flow in my limbs.

I do not have more than one tumor at the same time.

My lab tests for Step 2 were done within the last 2 weeks.

I have not had a stroke or mini-stroke in the last year.

I do not have symptoms from peripheral vascular disease.

My cancer has spread to the mesentery but without clear lymph node involvement.

I have had radiation therapy to my pelvic area before.

I haven't had significant bleeding unrelated to my colon cancer in the last 6 months.

I have a serious or non-healing wound, skin ulcer, or bone fracture.

I am currently experiencing significant nerve pain or tingling.

I have not had any major surgeries or procedures recently.

My tumor is located at least 12 cm from the anal opening, as confirmed by a doctor.

My colon cancer is confirmed to be Stage II adenocarcinoma.

I have hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer.

I have never had inflammatory bowel disease.

I have never had cancer spread to distant parts of my abdomen.

My surgery removed all visible cancer without leaving any behind.

I haven't started any treatment for my cancer.

I have not had a complete blockage or tear in my intestines.

I do not have another type of cancer besides the one being treated.

I can take care of myself and am up and about more than half of my waking hours.

I will start treatment between 28 and 60 days after my surgery.

I do not have any health conditions that would prevent me from taking the study drugs.

I have a history of high blood pressure that doesn't meet certain criteria.
