The purpose of this study is to see if it is safe and effective to give CPI-1189 to patients with AIDS dementia.

Advanced HIV infection can cause AIDS dementia (brain damage due to HIV leading to loss of memory and muscle control). CPI-1189 may be able to postpone AIDS dementia or slow it down.

It has been over 4 weeks since my last chemotherapy session.

I haven't had any cancer other than nonmelanoma skin cancer in the last 5 years.

I do not have any serious illnesses besides my current condition.

My kidney function, measured by creatinine, is within normal limits.

I have no history of blood clotting disorders, recent heart attacks, strokes, or heart failure.

I haven't had radiation on more than 30% of my bone marrow and it's been weeks since my last radiation or isotope therapy.

It has been over 4 weeks since my last hormone therapy, excluding LHRH agonists.

I am able to get out of my bed or chair and move around.

I don't have uncontrolled diabetes or active stomach ulcers.

My prostate cancer is getting worse despite hormone therapy.

My cancer has not spread to my brain or its coverings.

I don't have severe nerve damage or major neurological/psychiatric disorders.

I had surgery less than 4 weeks ago and have had more than one debulking procedure.

My ovarian, tubal, or peritoneal cancer responded completely to initial treatment.

I had immunotherapy or used mouse-derived antibodies less than 6 weeks ago.

My bilirubin levels are not more than 1.5 times the normal upper limit.

My creatinine level is 1.6 mg/dL or lower.

I do not have serious heart conditions like heart failure or recent heart attacks.

I do not have immune conditions like eczema, HIV, autoimmune diseases, leukemia, lymphoma, skin diseases, open wounds, immunosuppression, active infections, or severe egg allergies.

I have not had vaccinia virus therapy or been on steroids/immunosuppressives recently.

My melanoma cannot be removed by surgery and has spread to my skin, fat, or lymph nodes.

My cancer can be reached with a needle through the skin.

It has been over 6 weeks since my last major cancer treatment.

I have seizures that are currently not under control.

I have untreated brain tumors or cancer spread to the lining of my brain.

I have fluid buildup in my abdomen or around my lungs.
