RATIONALE: Interferon alfa may interfere with the growth of cancer cells.Vaccines may make the body build an immune response to kill tumor cells. It is not yet known whether melanoma vaccine plus interferon alfa is more effective than interferon alfa alone in treating patients with metastatic melanoma.

Interferon Alfa With/Without Vaccine for Skin Cancer

This study is evaluating whether interferon alfa plus a vaccine is more effective than interferon alfa alone in treating patients with metastatic melanoma.

It has been over a year since I received interferon alfa or a melanoma vaccine.

I have had surgery for cancer that spread.

I have never been diagnosed with eye melanoma.

I haven't taken corticosteroids in the last week.

I am not taking any drugs that weaken my immune system.

My kidneys are working well enough (creatinine clearance is 40 mL/min or more).

My melanoma has spread to other parts of my body.

My heart can pump blood effectively without failure.

I have no other cancers except for non-melanoma skin cancer.

I have not had a heart attack in the last 6 months.

I do not have any heart rhythm problems that cause symptoms.

I am not currently taking cytokines or levamisole.

My thyroid condition is controlled with medication.

It has been over 4 months since my last adjuvant therapy.

I can't be made cancer-free by surgery or I have chosen not to undergo surgery.

I am not currently receiving chemotherapy.

I am fully active or restricted in physically strenuous activity but can do light work.

I have had radiation therapy for cancer that has spread.

Melanoma Vaccine

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining chemotherapy with peripheral stem cell transplantation may allow the doctor to give higher doses of chemotherapy drugs and kill more tumor cells.

PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation work in treating patients with stage IIIB breast cancer.

Chemotherapy + Stem Cell Transplant for Breast Cancer

This study is evaluating whether chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation work better than chemotherapy alone in treating patients with stage IIIB breast cancer.

Your liver enzymes (SGOT or SGPT) should not be more than 1.5 times the normal limit.

Your lung function test shows that your lungs are working at least 60% as well as they should be.

Your heart's pumping function is very strong, measured by a special heart scan.

You can exhale at least 60% of the air in your lungs in one second.

You have had a type of disease that affects your lymphatic system.

You have had cancer that is currently active.

You had cancer in the last 5 years, except for certain types of skin cancer.

You have a specific type of advanced breast cancer with skin involvement and certain symptoms.

You were diagnosed with a medical condition in the last 6 months.

You are able to perform daily activities without much difficulty.

You have enough infection-fighting white blood cells in your body.

Your blood platelet count is at least 100,000 per cubic millimeter.

Your bilirubin levels are lower than 1.5 mg/dL.

Your creatinine level is below 1.2 mg/dL.

Your kidneys can clean at least 80 milliliters of waste from your blood every minute.

You have not had hemorrhagic cystitis in the past.

Your oxygen levels in the air are higher than 85 mmHg.

Your carbon dioxide levels in the air you breathe should not be too high, measured at 43 mmHg or lower.

You have not had any cancer except for certain types of skin cancer or very early stage cervical cancer in the past 5 years.

You do not have any problems with your brain or spinal cord.

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug may kill more cancer cells. Chemoprotective drugs such as amifostine may protect normal cells from the side effects of chemotherapy.

PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of combining topotecan and cytarabine given with amifostine in treating patients who have myelodysplastic syndrome.

My blood disorder is considered high-risk due to specific poor indicators.

I have never had a blood or bone marrow transplant.

I haven't had chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia, except possibly hydroxyurea or low dose cytarabine.

I am fully active or can carry out light work.

I have never been treated with topotecan.

I haven't taken blood pressure medication for at least 24 hours before amifostine.

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Monoclonal antibodies can locate tumor cells and either kill them or deliver tumor-killing substances to them without harming normal cells. It is not yet known if chemotherapy is more effective with or without monoclonal antibody therapy for acute myelogenous leukemia.

PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of combination chemotherapy with or without monoclonal antibody therapy in treating patients who have refractory or relapsed acute myelogenous leukemia.

Combination Chemotherapy + Monoclonal Antibody for Acute Myeloid Leukemia

This study is evaluating whether chemotherapy with or without monoclonal antibodies is more effective for treating people with acute myelogenous leukemia.

I will use effective birth control during and for 1 month after the study.

I have a serious infection that isn't getting better with treatment.

I have been diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia.

My bilirubin level is above 2.0 mg/dL, not due to Gilbert's disease or leukemia.

My heart's left ventricle isn't working properly.

I haven't had recent serious heart problems.

I can perform most of my daily activities without assistance.

I do not have leukemia in my brain or spinal cord.

I do not have any other cancer that needs treatment.

My blood, liver, kidney, and heart meet the trial's health requirements.

I do not have leukemia in an advanced stage.

I am currently receiving treatment for cancer.

I do not have any serious infections that aren't controlled by medication.

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage tumor cells. Peripheral stem cell transplantation may allow the doctor to give higher doses of chemotherapy and kill more tumor cells. It is not yet known if combination chemotherapy is more effective with or without radiation therapy and/or surgery in treating Ewing's sarcoma.

PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying different combination chemotherapy regimens to see how well they work when given with or without peripheral stem cell transplantation, radiation therapy, and/or surgery in treating patients with Ewing's sarcoma.

Combination Chemotherapy for Ewing's Sarcoma

My cancer is a type of Ewing's sarcoma or related.

My disease is either operable, was operated on, needs or doesn’t need immediate radiotherapy, has spread to lungs/pleura or beyond, and it’s been less than 45 days since my definitive biopsy.

My kidney function is normal, with a filtration rate of 60 mL/min or more.

My heart functions normally, with good pumping ability.

I don't have any health or social issues that would stop me from joining the study.

This partially randomized phase III trial studies isotretinoin with dinutuximab, aldesleukin, and sargramostim to see how well it works compared to isotretinoin alone following stem cell transplant in treating patients with neuroblastoma. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as isotretinoin, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells, by stopping them from dividing, or by stopping them from spreading. Monoclonal antibodies, such as dinutuximab, may block tumor growth in different ways by targeting certain cells. Aldesleukin and sargramostim may stimulate a person's white blood cells to kill cancer cells. It is not yet known if chemotherapy is more effective with or without dinutuximab, aldesleukin, and sargramostim following stem cell transplant in treating neuroblastoma.

Isotretinoin With or Without Dinutuximab, Aldesleukin, and Sargramostim Following Stem Cell Transplant in Treating Patients With Neuroblastoma

Isotretinoin +/- Immunotherapy for Neuroblastoma

This study is evaluating whether a combination of chemotherapy, isotretinoin, dinutuximab, aldesleukin, and sargramostim is more effective than chemotherapy alone in treating patients with neuroblastoma.

My heart's pumping ability is confirmed to be normal by recent tests.

I have high-risk neuroblastoma, or it became high-risk after initial diagnosis.

I completed therapy for my cancer, including intensive treatment and a stem cell transplant.

My seizures are under control with medication and I have no severe brain-related side effects.

My parent or guardian has given written consent for me to participate.

I am eligible for a second stem cell transplant.

My latest bone marrow tests show less than 10% tumor cells before my stem cell transplant or joining this study.

I started my first chemotherapy for high-risk neuroblastoma less than 12 months ago.

I've had recent scans and tests to check my cancer's stage before joining the trial.

I've completed therapy for neuroblastoma, including intensive treatments and possibly surgery.

I am eligible for a tandem transplant and have followed specific treatment protocols within the last 12 months.

My veno-occlusive disease is stable or getting better.

My lung function tests are above 60% of what's expected, or I'm a child without breathing issues.

My neuroblastoma shows a positive response according to specific criteria before stem cell transplant.

My kidney function is within the required range for my age and gender.

I have never received GD2 antibody therapy.

I can do most activities and my doctor thinks I have at least 2 months to live.

I still have cancer after radiotherapy but haven't had a biopsy.

My neuroblastoma shows a positive response to treatment before stem cell transplant.

My kidney function is normal or near normal.

The purpose of this phase II study is to evaluate an investigational monoclonal antibody for the treatment of glucocorticoid-refractory Graft Versus Host Disease (GVHD). Patients diagnosed with GVHD who have not responded satisfactorily to, or are intolerant of, treatment with standard agents will be considered for entry. Patients will be allowed to continue on their other immunosuppressive drugs at stable doses during the trial. The research is being conducted at up to 20 clinical research sites in the US.

This study is evaluating whether an investigational monoclonal antibody can be used to treat patients with glucocorticoid-refractory GVHD.

My kidney, liver, heart functions, and blood counts are within normal ranges.

I have had a bone marrow transplant from a donor.

I have symptoms like skin thickening, stiff joints, mouth sores, or diarrhea.

I have moderate to severe graft-versus-host disease.

My condition worsened or didn't improve after therapy, within 100 days post-transplant.

Visilizumab

The primary purpose of the study is to determine the efficacy of an investigational therapy called DCVax(R)-L in patients with newly diagnosed GBM for whom surgery is indicated. Patients must enter screening at a participating site prior to surgical resection of the tumor. Patients will receive the standard of care, including radiation and Temodar therapy and two out of three will additionally receive DCVax-L, with the remaining one third receiving a placebo. All patients will have the option to receive DCVax-L in a crossover arm upon documented disease progression. (note: DCVax-L when used for patients with brain cancer is sometimes also referred to as DCVax-Brain)

This study is evaluating whether a vaccine can improve survival for people with brain cancer.

I stopped taking steroids at least 10 days before my leukapheresis.

My initial treatment was surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible, followed by radiation and Temodar chemotherapy.

I agree not to receive certain cancer treatments except for temozolomide as per the Stupp Protocol while on DCVax-L.

My tumor sample from surgery is enough for the protein test.

I have enough DCVax-L available for treatment after it was made.

I have been diagnosed with Grade IV brain cancer in one side of my brain.

My bone marrow, liver, and kidneys are working well.

I am between 18 and 70 years old and can legally consent.

My cancer did not worsen after finishing radiation therapy.

This study is evaluating whether a combination of drugs can improve the survival of people with aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

My cancer worsened only once after responding to chemotherapy.

I have a history of lymphoblastic lymphoma or mantle cell lymphoma.

My condition did not improve after chemotherapy.

My creatinine level is 1.5 mg/dL or lower.

My cancer is only in my bone marrow and does not have a measurable tumor.

My liver function tests are within the required limits.

I am fully active or able to carry out light work.

My lymphoma is aggressive and confirmed by a biopsy.

My heart functions well, with no recent heart attacks or severe irregular heartbeats.

This randomized phase IIB trial studies imatinib mesylate at two different doses and dasatinib to see how well they work in treating patients with previously untreated chronic phase chronic myelogenous leukemia. Imatinib mesylate or dasatinib may stop the growth of cancer cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth.

Imatinib or Dasatinib for Chronic Myeloid Leukemia

This study is evaluating whether a drug called imatinib mesylate or dasatinib can stop the growth of cancer cells in patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia.

I haven't had major surgery in the last 28 days and have recovered from past surgeries.

My CML is in the chronic phase, confirmed by recent tests.

I can take care of myself and am up and about more than 50% of my waking hours.

My heart is healthy and I've had an ECG test in the last 42 days without major issues.

I was diagnosed with CML within the last 6 months and tested positive for the Philadelphia chromosome.

I have CML and have only been treated with hydroxyurea or anagrelide.

I haven't had chemotherapy for stem cell mobilization.

I do not have a history of serious bleeding disorders not related to my cancer.

I have no cancer history except for certain skin cancers, early-stage cancers in remission, or any cancer I've been free from for 5 years.

This clinical trial is studying how well surgery and/or combination chemotherapy with or without radiation therapy or observation only work in treating young patients with newly diagnosed stage I or stage II lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin disease (LPHD). Surgery may be an effective treatment for LPHD. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as doxorubicin, vincristine, prednisone, and cyclophosphamide, work in different ways to stop the growth of cancer cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill cancer cells. Giving more than one drug (combination chemotherapy) with or without radiation therapy may kill more cancer cells.

Treating Young Patients With Newly Diagnosed, Low Stage, Lymphocyte Predominant Hodgkin Disease

This study is evaluating whether surgery and/or combination chemotherapy with or without radiation therapy or observation only work in treating young patients with newly diagnosed stage I or stage II lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin disease.

I have been newly diagnosed with LPHD and haven't received any treatment.

My cancer is in the early stage and hasn't grown large.

My cancer is at an early stage and has not formed a large tumor.

I agree not to breastfeed if I receive chemotherapy or radiation.

I am a woman who can have children and have a negative pregnancy test before starting treatment.
