Treatment Summary

Ibuprofen is a medication used to reduce inflammation and pain. It is a type of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and was first developed in 1960 as an alternative to aspirin. Ibuprofen was patented in 1961 and was first released to treat rheumatoid arthritis in the UK in 1969 and the US in 1974. It is available over-the-counter in the form of a racemic mixture, meaning it contains both the R- and S-enantiomers. The S-enantiomer is believed to be more effective than the R-enantiomer in treating pain and inflammation

Effectiveness

How Ibuprofen Affects Patients

Ibuprofen is used to manage pain, fever, and inflammation. It works by blocking the production of prostanoids, which are substances involved in inflammation. Ibuprofen can also help with dental procedures, menstrual pain, and migraines. It may also reduce neurodegeneration and help with Parkinson's Disease and breast cancer.

How Ibuprofen works in the body

Ibuprofen works by blocking an enzyme called cyclooxygenase. This enzyme helps create substances called prostaglandins, which cause pain and fever. Ibuprofen stops the production of prostaglandins, which reduces inflammation, pain, fever, and swelling. However, blocking this enzyme can also lead to side effects like stomach ulcers.

When to interrupt dosage

The recommended dose of Ibuprofen is reliant upon the identified condition, including smooth muscle relaxation prior to radiological procedures, Catarrh and Pain relief. The quantity of dosage differs, according to the technique of delivery (e.g. Kit - Oral; Topical or Tablet) featured in the table below.

Ibuprofen Toxicity & Overdose Risk

Consuming more than 99mg/kg of ibuprofen can lead to abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, vertigo, drowsiness, insomnia, headache, fainting, ringing in the ears, depression of the central nervous system, seizures, and difficulty breathing. In very rare cases, it can also cause metabolic acidosis, abnormal liver function, high potassium levels, kidney failure, and coma. The reported lethal dose of ibuprofen is 636mg/kg in rats, 740mg/kg in mice, and 495mg/kg in guinea pigs.

Patient Q&A Section about ibuprofen

These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.

Who should not take ibuprofen?

"If you have severe heart failure, severe kidney failure or severe liver failure, are trying to get pregnant, have high blood pressure that's not under control, have heart disease or mild to moderate heart failure, or have ever had a stroke, you may not be able to use Invokana."

Answered by AI

What is ibuprofen used for?

"Ibuprofen can be bought without a prescription and is a type of painkiller known as an NSAID. It can be used to relieve mild to moderate pain, such as toothache, migraine, and period pain."

Answered by AI

How is ibuprofen harmful?

"NSAIDs may cause ulcers, bleeding, or holes in the stomach or intestine, which can develop at any time during treatment and may happen without warning symptoms. This can lead to death."

Answered by AI

What is better Tylenol or ibuprofen?

"Acetaminophen is most effective for fever, aches, and pains, but is less effective for pain caused by inflammation. Ibuprofen is more effective for pain caused by inflammation, such as menstrual cramps and arthritis."

Educational Interventions for Opioid Use in Dentistry

Any Age
All Sexes
Vancouver, Canada

The aim of this study is to estimate the impact of providing personalized prescribing data and educational materials on opioid prescribing to dentists in British Columbia, Canada. The main research questions are: 1. What is the impact of an intervention on the use of opioids for dental pain? The intervention includes a personalized prescribing report (a "Portrait"), brief educational summary, and patient education materials; and 2. Does the impact of the intervention increase when dentists are also invited to attend facilitated audit-and-feedback group sessions and to develop a practice improvement plan? Using administrative health data, the prescribing of those in different combinations of materials in the Early Group will be compared to those in the Delayed Group to estimate the impact of the materials on prescribing by the dentists.

Oxygen Concentration for Premature Birth

No minimum age - 10
All Sexes
Edmonton, Canada

This study is trying to figure out the best amount of oxygen to give preterm babies (born between 32 and 35 weeks) right after birth. In the past, doctors used high levels of oxygen, but research has shown that using lower levels might help reduce the risk of death in full-term babies without harming brain development. However, investigators don't know the best oxygen level for babies born a little early (32 to 35 weeks). Some early data suggests that giving lower oxygen levels (FiO2 0.3) may not help babies reach healthy oxygen levels by 5 minutes after birth. This study will compare two oxygen levels-FiO2 0.6 and FiO2 0.3 to see which helps babies breathe better and need less ongoing breathing support. Researchers will study over 1,100 babies in hospitals across Alberta, Canada, to find the safest approach for these babies.

App-based Breathing Program for Migraine

18+
All Sexes
Phoenix, AZ

Migraine is one of the most common neurological disorders, characterized by recurrent headaches, sensitivity to light and movement, nausea, and autonomic dysregulation. Although mind-body interventions like biofeedback have shown their efficacy, they remain underutilized due to barriers such as transportation, time constraints, lack of awareness, stigma, and cost. A targeted approach to enhancing HRV is HRV biofeedback (HRVB), a technique using visual or auditory feedback to help people regulate HRV through slow-paced breathing and positive emotional regulation to promote ANS balance and emotional resilience. Investigators will conduct a remotely delivered pilot RCT of an 8-week, 10 min/day, novel app-based HRVB intervention compared to a sham control intervention (matching intervention time and attention with no biofeedback component) in adult with chronic migraine. Investigators hypothesize data collected from the study will: a) support the feasibility and acceptability of the remotely delivered app-based HRVB intervention among adults with chronic migraine, and b) provide insights into refining the intervention by examining patterns of change in migraine and psychological outcomes from pre- to post-intervention.
