What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores whether a short mindfulness recording can reduce pain for patients waiting at an orthopedic clinic. Participants will either listen to a mindfulness practice involving breathing and focusing on personal meaning or a talk about general pain management strategies, such as using ice or resting. The trial aims to determine if mindfulness techniques noticeably relieve pain. Individuals receiving treatment at Tallahassee Orthopedic Center who understand English fluently may be suitable for this study. As an unphased study, this trial provides a unique opportunity to explore new methods of pain management through mindfulness.

Do I need to stop my current medications for the trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.

What prior data suggests that this mindfulness practice is safe for pain management?

Research has shown that mindfulness meditation can help reduce pain. One study reviewed 30 different trials and found that mindfulness eased chronic pain more effectively than many other methods. Another review of 24 studies found that mindfulness led to small improvements in pain symptoms.

Mindfulness practices are generally easy for people to handle. The studies did not report any major safety concerns, and people who try mindfulness usually don't experience serious side effects. This makes mindfulness a safe option for many seeking to manage pain.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Unlike standard pain management options, which often involve medications like opioids or NSAIDs, the mindfulness approach offers a drug-free alternative. Researchers are excited about mindfulness because it targets the mind-body connection, helping individuals manage pain through techniques like mindful breathing and mindful mapping. This method encourages patients to focus on their personal experience of pain and find new meanings, potentially leading to improved well-being without the side effects associated with traditional medications.

What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for pain?

Research has shown that mindfulness practices can help reduce pain. For example, one study found that mindfulness-based stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy lowered pain intensity more effectively than usual care. Another review found that mindfulness meditation led to small but noticeable decreases in pain across various studies. Additionally, brain scans have shown that mindfulness meditation activates specific brain areas that help reduce pain, indicating it works differently than a placebo. In this trial, participants will be randomized to either a mindfulness intervention or a pain psychoeducation intervention. These findings suggest that mindfulness could be a useful tool for managing pain.36789
