Treatment Summary
Levonorgestrel (LNG) is a synthetic hormone used in contraception, hormone therapy, and emergency contraception. It is sometimes referred to as Plan B and is available in forms such as IUDs (Jaydess, Kyleena, Mirena), a subdermal implant, and a single agent pill. Effectiveness
How Daysee Affects Patients
Levonorgestrel prevents pregnancy by stopping ovulation, fertilization, and implantation. If used according to instructions within 72 hours after sex, the emergency contraceptive pill containing levonorgestrel is 89% effective. The intrauterine and implantable devices with levonorgestrel are more than 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. Levonorgestrel can also be used in hormonal therapy to reduce the risk of endometrial cancer caused by taking estrogen.
How Daysee works in the body
Levonorgestrel is a hormone that prevents ovulation, changes the consistency of cervical mucus and affects endometrial receptivity. It works by binding to progesterone and androgen receptors, which slows the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus, preventing the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) surge that normally precedes ovulation. It also thickens cervical mucus to prevent sperm from entering the uterus. When combined with estrogens for hormone therapy, it reduces the risk of unopposed estrogen therapy leading to endometrial cancer.
When to interrupt dosage
The measure of Daysee is contingent upon the diagnosed affliction, including Endometrial Hyperplasia, Emergency Contraception and Hypermenorrhea. The dosage is dependant upon the method of delivery featured in the table beneath.
