Effectiveness

How Sodium Nitroprusside Affects PatientsNitroprusside is a drug that relaxes the walls of blood vessels, especially veins, causing them to expand and increasing blood flow. It does not have an effect on other muscle groups, such as the uterus or duodenum.
How Sodium Nitroprusside works in the bodySodium nitroprusside works in two ways. First, it breaks down into molecules that bind to hemoglobin, forming a compound called cyanmethemoglobin. This compound binds to cyanide ions, which are toxic, and removes them from the body. Second, it breaks down further into nitric oxide, which increases production of a molecule called cGMP. This molecule helps reduce calcium in the cells, leading to relaxation of the blood vessels and a widening of the arteries.

Description
Amifostine
Major
Nitroprusside may increase the hypotensive activities of Amifostine.
Technetium Tc-99m oxidronate
Major
Nitroprusside can cause a decrease in the absorption of Technetium Tc-99m oxidronate resulting in a reduced serum concentration and potentially a decrease in efficacy.

Minor
Nitroprusside can cause a decrease in the absorption of 3-Aza-2,3-Dihydrogeranyl Diphosphate resulting in a reduced serum concentration and potentially a decrease in efficacy.
Abacavir
Minor
Nitroprusside may decrease the excretion rate of Abacavir which could result in a higher serum level.
Acebutolol
Minor
Nitroprusside may increase the hypotensive activities of Acebutolol.
Sodium Nitroprusside Toxicity & Overdose RiskTaking too much nitroprusside can cause dangerously low blood pressure, cyanide poisoning, or thiocyanate poisoning. The lethal dose in rabbits, dogs, mice, and rats is 2.8, 5.0, 8.4, and 11.2 mg/kg respectively.
