Treatment Summary
Amiodarone is a medication used to treat irregular or abnormal heart rhythms. It is typically prescribed for life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias, as well as atrial fibrillation. This drug can be very powerful and has the potential to cause serious side effects, so it should only be used to treat its approved indications.

How Cordarone Affects Patients
Amiodarone is an anti-arrhythmic drug that helps to prevent and treat irregular heartbeats. When given intravenously, it helps relax the muscles in the walls of the blood vessels, lowers the pressure of the blood, and increases the amount of blood the heart pumps. However, when taken orally, it does not have much of an effect on how much blood is pumped. Taking amiodarone also affects the QRS and QT intervals in the heart, and can cause thyroid problems due to the high levels of iodine in the drug. Controlled clinical trials have not shown that taking amiodarone orally increases
How Cordarone works in the body
Amiodarone is a type of drug that helps to treat abnormal heart rhythms. It works by blocking potassium currents that help the heart muscle to repolarize after a contraction. This increases the time it takes for the heart to repolarize and prevents abnormal heart rhythms. Amiodarone also affects other parts of the body, such as beta-adrenergic receptors and calcium channels, which can lead to side effects such as low blood pressure, slowed heart rate, and abnormal rhythm in the heart. It can also affect receptors in the liver, leading to fatty changes, and it can bind to the thyroid receptor, potentially leading to

Cordarone Toxicity & Overdose Risk
The highest dose of amiodarone found to be non-toxic in mice and rats is 3,000 mg/kg. Overdosing on amiodarone can be fatal, as it can lead to irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, shock, slow heartbeat, or damage to the liver. Treatment for an overdose may include fluids, medicines that raise blood pressure, or drugs that increase the strength of the heart's contractions. In some cases, a pacemaker may also be needed. Since amiodarone cannot be removed from the body through dialysis, regular liver function tests are recommended.

Patient Q&A Section about cordarone
These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.
What is Cordarone used for?
"Amiodarone is a drug used to treat and prevent an irregular heartbeat. It slows down nerve activity in the heart and relaxes an overactive heart."
Answered by AI
What are the side effects of Cordarone?
"The following are symptoms: nausea, vomiting, constipation, weight loss, fatigue, pulmonary fibrosis, heart block, and heart failure."
Answered by AI
What type of drug is Cordarone?
"CORDARONE (amiodarone HCl) is a drug used to treat irregular heartbeats, available as a pink, scored tablet. Each tablet contains 200 mg of amiodarone hydrochloride. Other inactive ingredients present are colloidal silicon dioxide, lactose, magnesium stearate, povidone, starch, and FD&C Red 40."
Answered by AI
Does Cordarone affect blood pressure?
"Amiodarone not only prevents irregular heartbeats, but also widens blood vessels. This can lead to lower blood pressure. Since this is also beneficial for patients with congestive heart failure, amiodarone may help these patients as well."
