It was formerly used as a cough suppressant, but it is now mostly replaced by dextromethorphan in cough and cold medicines. Hydromorphone, a more powerful version of hydrocodone, is often used for severe pain. The FDA approved it in 1943 for use in the drug Hycodan.

How Zohydro Er Affects PatientsHydrocodone blocks pain signals from being sent to the brain and spinal cord. As it does this, it can create a feeling of euphoria, slow down breathing, and make you feel drowsy.
How Zohydro Er works in the bodyHydrocodone works by binding to and activating opioid receptors in the body, particularly the mu opioid receptor. This activation causes several changes, such as hyperpolarizing neurons in the spinal cord and preventing the release of neurotransmitters. It also activates reward pathways in the brain, which can lead to addiction. Hydrocodone also affects other opioid receptors, such as the delta opioid receptor, however its effects on these are not well understood. Through these effects, hydrocodone can reduce pain signals and cause sedation and respiratory depression.

Zohydro Er Toxicity & Overdose RiskTaking too much hydrocodone can lead to side effects such as difficulty breathing, sleepiness, coma, limp muscles, cold skin, small pupils, fluid buildup in the lungs, slow heartbeat, low blood pressure, difficulty breathing, unusual snoring, and death. If someone overdoses on hydrocodone, they should receive oxygen, fluids, and medications to increase blood pressure if needed. In some cases, opioid blockers like naloxone may be used to reverse the effects of the drug. Close monitoring is still necessary after using naloxone as the effects of the hydrocodone may return. I was originally prescribed Vicodin for my pain, but I didn't like the way it made me feel. Tylenol had a similar effect on me, so I asked to try this medication instead. Zohydro has been much better for me; I don't feel high or out of sorts, and my pain level is manageable now.

Spinal fusion led to chronic pain for years. This medication offers me some relief, though sometimes I need to take two at a time. My doctor recently added Norco to my regimen before injections. I have a script card that covers part of the cost, but I dread finding out how much it really costs!

I was on this medication for five months, and it worked well until they came out with the newly formulated one witch has n-said in it. I noticed the difference right away; it wasn't as effective as the plain ER with more side affects.

Zohydro Er for Chronic Pain with Narcotic Drug Tolerance
This medication made me incredibly sick, with headaches, nausea, and diarrhea. I have a high tolerance for Hydrocodone, so I'm not sure what was in this that had such an effect on me. I've been living with chronic pain from an incurable condition for years now, and have very limited mobility in one leg. I decided long ago that I didn't want to take anything that would change who I am as a person, which is why I don't even drink alcohol. Not many pharmacies carry this drug, and it's been difficult to find in stock. I personally found that a 10mg hydrocodone was much more effective than the 50mg Zohydro. In my opinion, this medication is not worth the trouble.

I was given this medication before moving to a higher dosage of another treatment. They are awful, didn't provide any pain relief and the cost is outrageous. I'm very disappointed and will be changing to something else.
