Treatment Summary

Ticlopidine, sold under the brand name Ticlid, is a medication used to prevent thrombotic strokes in people who cannot take aspirin or have not responded to aspirin. It works by blocking the ADP receptor involved in platelet aggregation. However, it has a black-box warning for decreased white blood cell and platelet counts, so it is necessary to monitor these levels when taking ticlopidine.

Effectiveness

How Ticlid Affects Patients

Ticlopidine is a drug that is changed in the body into a different form that stops blood cells called platelets from clumping together. This reduces the time it takes for bleeding to stop when an injury occurs. In its original form, ticlopidine does not have any effect at the levels typically found in the body.

How Ticlid works in the body

Ticlopidine works by preventing a molecule called ADP from binding to platelets. Normally, ADP would activate a receptor on the platelet which would cause it to bind to fibrinogen, leading to platelet aggregation. Ticlopidine stops this process from taking place, preventing platelets from clumping together and causing blockages in the blood vessels. Even when platelets are activated by other substances, ticlopidine still works to inhibit the process.

Ticlid Toxicity & Overdose Risk

Ticlopidine is a very toxic drug, as 1600 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg doses have been found to be fatal for rats and mice. Symptoms of overdose include bleeding in the stomach and intestines, seizures, low body temperature, difficulty breathing, and trouble walking. Patients taking ticlopidine should be monitored for low white blood cell count and platelet count, as these side effects can be severe.

Ticlid for Treatment to Prevent a Blood Clot in a Vascular Stent

About six weeks ago, I had a stent placed. A few weeks after that, I had a severe reaction to the Plavix medication. All of this happened within seven hours of going to bed. Since then, I've been having issues with dizziness and sinus problems. I'm not sure if they're related, but it's been quite unpleasant nonetheless.

Ticlid for Blood Clot Prevention Following Percutaneous Coronary Intervention

Ever since I started taking Ticlid, I've had nonstop diarrhea (up to 9 times a day). It's been 3-4 weeks now and there's no sign of it letting up.

Patient Q&A Section about ticlid

These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.

What is the generic name for Ticlid?

"Antiplatelet drugs like Ticlopidine help to reduce the risk of thrombotic strokes by inhibiting the binding of ADP to its receptor."

Answered by AI

What is Ticlid used for?

"Ticlid is a drug that inhibits platelet aggregation, which is used to prevent blood clots after a recent heart attack or stroke, or in people with certain disorders of the heart or blood vessels."

Answered by AI

Why was Ticlid discontinued?

"Ticlopidine is a drug that was approved for use in the United States in 1991. However, it is not often used now because of the serious risks of side effects like agranulocytosis, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, and aplastic anemia. There is also another drug, clopidogrel, that has a similar effect and is available."

Answered by AI

What class of drug is Ticlid?

"Ticlid is a drug that is used to prevent blood clots. It is part of a class of drugs called antiplatelet agents. It is not known if Ticlid is safe and effective in children younger than 18 years of age."

All Sexes
Jacksonville, FL

This trial tests a promising new intervention to promote post-stroke neural reorganization and functional recovery. The Q Therapeutic (BQ 3.0) is a wearable medical system that produces and delivers non-invasive, extremely-low-intensity and low-frequency, frequency-tuned electromagnetic fields in order to stimulate neuronal networks with the aim of reducing disability and promoting neurorecovery. This trial is a prospective, single-arm, open-label, single center clinical trial designed to evaluate the safety, feasibility, and efficacy of the Q Therapeutic (BQ 3.0) System in the rehabilitation of people with chronic stroke.
