How Lodine Affects PatientsPovidone iodine is a type of disinfectant that works by making proteins in the body stop working, which leads to the death of harmful microorganisms. It is effective at killing viruses, bacteria, and other organisms with low risk to humans. Examples of such organisms include Staphylococcus aureus, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, syphilis, hepatitis B virus, HIV, and Trichomonas vaginalis. How Lodine works in the bodyPovidone-iodine works by releasing iodine, which then enters cells and disrupts the proteins and nucleic acids that make them up. This causes the cells to become denatured and deactivated. Iodine also has anti-inflammatory effects, such as reducing the release of inflammatory mediators like TNF-α and β-galactosidase, and inhibiting the production of metalloproteinase. It can also help the healing process by activating monocytes, T-lymphocytes, and macrophages.
