How Fentanyl Citrate Affects PatientsFentanyl is a powerful painkiller that works by activating opioid receptors. It lasts for several hours and is relatively safe when taken as prescribed. However, fentanyl can be addictive, and should not be taken with alcohol or benzodiazepines.
How Fentanyl Citrate works in the bodyFentanyl works by binding to opioid receptors, especially the mu opioid receptor. This sends signals to the body's cells, telling them to stop working as much. This decreases the activity of the cells, resulting in a calming effect. It also causes an exchange of GTP for GDP, which results in a decrease in nerve activity.

Fentanyl Citrate Toxicity & Overdose RiskFentanyl has a toxic dose of 2.91mg/kg when administered intravenously in rats, 18mg/kg in rats and 368mg/kg in mice. The toxic dose in humans is unknown. Signs of overdose include difficulty breathing, drowsiness, confusion, weak muscles, cold and clammy skin, restricted pupils, fluid in the lungs, slow heartbeat, low blood pressure, and even death. If someone overdoses on fentanyl, they should receive a medication called naloxone or nalmefene to counteract the opioids and supportive measures to help maintain their breathing or advanced life support if their heart stops.

Fentanyl Citrate for Pain In a Cancer Patient When On Pain Medication
This drug has been extremely effective at preventing me from needing to go to the hospital for pain control. I've been on it for three years now, and it's just too expensive to pay for out-of-pocket. Insurance companies are only willing to authorize it for cancer patients, which is a shame because it works miracles for breakthrough pain that isn't caused by cancer.
