Fentanyl is also often used as an adulterant in illicit drugs such as heroin. In 2017, over two thirds of all overdose deaths in the United States involved some form of opioid, while in Canada, an average of 11 people die every day from opioid overdoses. How Fentanyl Citrate works in the body

Fentanyl Citrate Toxicity & Overdose Risk

Fentanyl has a toxic dose of 2.91mg/kg when administered intravenously in rats, 18mg/kg in rats and 368mg/kg in mice. The toxic dose in humans is unknown. Signs of overdose include difficulty breathing, drowsiness, confusion, weak muscles, cold and clammy skin, restricted pupils, fluid in the lungs, slow heartbeat, low blood pressure, and even death. If someone overdoses on fentanyl, they should receive a medication called naloxone or nalmefene to counteract the opioids and supportive measures to help maintain their breathing or advanced life support if their heart stops.

Fentanyl Citrate for Pain In a Cancer Patient When On Pain Medication

This drug has been extremely effective at preventing me from needing to go to the hospital for pain control. I've been on it for three years now, and it's just too expensive to pay for out-of-pocket. Insurance companies are only willing to authorize it for cancer patients, which is a shame because it works miracles for breakthrough pain that isn't caused by cancer.

This medication does a great job at managing my breakthrough pain. I have a disease that causes the bones in my large joints to slowly die from lack of blood flow, and this medication really helps me get through the day. The downside is that it's very expensive and most insurance companies don't cover it; but it's definitely worth fighting for if you need it.
