It is related to other opioids like morphine and oxycodone. Fentanyl is also often used as an adulterant in illicit drugs such as heroin. In 2017, over two thirds of all overdose deaths in the United States involved some form of opioid, while in Canada, an average of 11 people die every day from opioid overdoses. Fentanyl Citrate Toxicity & Overdose RiskFentanyl has a toxic dose of 2.91mg/kg when administered intravenously in rats, 18mg/kg in rats and 368mg/kg in mice. The toxic dose in humans is unknown. Signs of overdose include difficulty breathing, drowsiness, confusion, weak muscles, cold and clammy skin, restricted pupils, fluid in the lungs, slow heartbeat, low blood pressure, and even death. If someone overdoses on fentanyl, they should receive a medication called naloxone or nalmefene to counteract the opioids and supportive measures to help maintain their breathing or advanced life support if their heart stops.
