Treatment Summary
Fexofenadine is an over-the-counter antihistamine medication used to treat allergies. It is more selective for the H1 receptor than older antihistamines and does not cross the blood-brain barrier, meaning it does not cause side effects like drowsiness. Fexofenadine is the main active ingredient in terfenadine and is given as a mix of two enantiomers which both have similar antihistamine effects.

Effectiveness
How Allegra Allergy Affects Patients
Fexofenadine is a drug used to treat allergy symptoms. It works by blocking the effects of histamine, a chemical naturally produced by your body which is responsible for allergy symptoms. Fexofenadine usually lasts around 24 hours and starts working within 1-3 hours. It should not be taken with fruit juice, as this can reduce its effectiveness.
How Allegra Allergy works in the body
Fexofenadine is used to treat allergies. It works by preventing the activation of a receptor called H1 histamine, which triggers the body's allergic response. Fexofenadine has a strong and specific affinity for this receptor and won't cause any side effects in the central nervous system. It stabilizes the inactive form of the receptor, keeping it from activating and causing the body's allergic response.
