Effectiveness
How Silvadene Affects Patients
Silver sulfadiazine is an effective antibiotic that can kill many types of bacteria and yeast. It is different than other antibiotics in that it does not block a specific enzyme, which could be beneficial in certain situations.
How Silvadene works in the body
Silver sulfadiazine works to kill bacteria by targeting the cell membrane and cell wall. It does this by binding to several parts of the bacteria, such as nucleophilic amino acids and sulfhydryl, amino, imidazole, phosphate, and carboxyl groups of proteins. Silver also makes the membrane more porous, which leads to the death of the cell. Sulfadiazine, meanwhile, stops the bacteria from producing folic acid, which it needs to survive. Together, these two components work in synergy, creating a stronger effect than either one alone.
