How Lamictal Odt Affects Patients

Lamotrigine helps to control seizures and improve mood by keeping nerve cells in the brain stable and preventing the release of excitatory chemicals, like glutamate, which can cause seizures. It has been noted to have an effect on the cardiovascular system, with a metabolite (substance created during metabolism) of lamotrigine being linked to changes in heart rate and rhythm. This metabolite is usually found in small amounts in people, but may increase if there is a decrease in the amount of drug that is metabolized due to liver disease.

How Lamictal Odt works in the body

Lamotrigine works by blocking sodium channels in the brain, which helps to stabilize nerve cell activity. It also binds to several different receptors in the body, which can help to reduce nerve pain, seizures and other symptoms related to bipolar disorder. Lamotrigine also weakly binds to Adenosine A1/A2 receptors, adrenergic receptors, dopamine receptors, GABA receptors, histamine receptors, opioid receptors and serotonin receptors. It has also been shown to inhibit certain calcium currents, which may also contribute to its anticonvulsant effects.

Lamictal Odt Toxicity & Overdose Risk

The lowest toxic dose of lamotrigine in mice and rats is 205mg/kg and 245mg/kg, respectively. Severe cases of overdose have seen up to 15g of lamotrigine ingested. Symptoms of overdose include coordination problems, eye twitching, increased seizures, decreased level of consciousness, coma, and changes to the heartbeat. There is no known antidote for lamotrigine, but supportive treatments such as hospitalization, airway protection, and stomach pumping may be recommended. It is not clear whether hemodialysis can remove the drug from the body.

I've been taking lamotrigine for a few months now and I have experienced many of the listed side effects, including nausea, sleeplessness, constipation, and weight gain. However, the treatment does seem to be effective overall. I haven't had any outbursts or episodes of screaming, which is an improvement.

I've been using this medication for a little while now to help with my bipolar depression. It's effective most of the time, which is great. Every once in a while I'll consider adding another drug to help supplement it, but so far that hasn't really seemed to make much difference. All in all, it's a good medication!

I was given this drug to help me sleep, but it actually made it harder for me to fall asleep. I would experience massive mood swings and became very irritable while taking it. I begged my doctor to take me off the medication after only two weeks.
