How Zofran Odt Affects PatientsOndansetron is a medicine that blocks serotonin receptors in the body, stopping the vomiting reflex and reducing nausea and vomiting. It is a relatively safe drug, but can cause a slight increase in the QTc interval, a measure of electrical activity in the heart. At the highest tested dose of 32mg, this increase can last up to 4 hours but is not expected to be significant at the recommended 8mg dose. Zofran Odt for Prevent Nausea and Vomiting After Surgery
I had a very frightening adverse side effect during surgery which is listed as "Rare Side Effect" for this drug. Heart problems emerged and required medical intervention to slow my heart rate back down to normal. According to my doctor, this sort of reaction is not uncommon for those who generally have a rapid heart beat in response to products with Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed, etc). So please take care to mention any sensitivities you might have to your doctor prior to taking this medication!

I was prescribed 8mg twice daily to stop nausea and vomiting from Gastroparesis. The grape-flavored vomit didn't work for me unfortunately; it only got rid of the sick feeling in my stomach about half the time. It also gave me horrible diarrhea a few times, which was incredibly unpleasant. I'm glad I only have to take this medication for a week.

Despite the rigorous application of the recommendations from the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) at CHUM, a recent local study reveals a prevalence of 25% PONV at home after outpatient surgery. However, the therapeutic options at home remain limited. This study aims to evaluate if the addition of 40 mg aprepitant to a multimodal strategy for preventing PONV improves clinical outcomes in high-risk patients undergoing outpatient surgery.

Autonomic Neural Blockade for Postoperative Symptoms in Bariatric Surgery

The purpose of this research is to evaluate if autonomic nerve block (ANB- blocking pain and nausea signals) decreases pain and anti-nausea medication requirements as well as the experience of pain/nausea during the first 72 hours after sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass surgery. Participants will be randomly assigned either to the standard of care or the ANB group before surgery. As part of standard of care, in both groups, laparoscopic bariatric surgery will be initiated with local anesthetic injected into the abdominal wall. In the ANB group, participants will be given an additional injection of local anesthetic medication to block nerves on and around the stomach.

The goal of this clinical study is to improve upon the standard practice of utilizing nerve blocks to enhance the satisfaction of patients undergoing shoulder, or foot and ankle surgery regarding their quality of pain control, the duration of their nerve blocks, as well as the avoidance of opioid medications and subsequently their undesirable side effects. The researchers hypothesize that dexmedetomidine and dexamethasone (Dex-Dex) will work synergistically as adjuncts in a low, non-weight based formula. This would allow the investigators to improve patient satisfaction by providing them with a superior means of pain control that is longer in duration with a decreased probability of unwanted side effects. The proposed clinical study will be a prospective, randomized control trial.

ML-Based Intervention for Vomiting in Pediatric Cancer

The goal of this single arm trial is to learn if a machine learning (ML) model predicting the risk of vomiting within the next 96 hours will impact vomiting outcomes in inpatient cancer pediatric patients. The main questions it aims to answer are whether an ML model predicting the risk of vomiting within the next 96 hours will: Primary 1\. Reduce the proportion with any vomiting within the 96-hour window Secondary 1. Reduce the number of vomiting episodes 2. Increase the proportion receiving care pathway-consistent care 3. Impact on number of administrations and costs of antiemetic medications Newly admitted participants will have a ML model predict the risk of vomiting within the next 96 hours according to their medical admission information. The prediction will be made at 8:30 AM following admission. Pharmacists will be charged with bringing information about patients' vomiting risk to the attention of the medical team and implementing interventions.
