Treatment Summary

Lactulose is a synthetic sugar-based drug used to treat constipation and portal-systemic encephalopathy (PSE). It was first synthesized in 1929, but it wasn't until the 1960s that its use as a laxative was investigated. It was approved by the FDA in 1977 and is now available over-the-counter. While it is an effective and safe option for treating constipation and PSE, its exact effectiveness is not clear. It is typically only used after lifestyle and dietary modifications have failed.

How Chronulac Affects Patients

Lactulose is a laxative commonly taken by mouth or rectally. It stays in the gastrointestinal tract and helps to soften stools and increase their volume, which can cause increased bowel sounds, bloating, burping, gas, and diarrhea.

How Chronulac works in the body

Lactulose is a medication that helps people with constipation and portal-systemic encephalopathy (PSE). It works by breaking down into organic acids in the large intestine and creating gas which increases the water content of the stool, making it softer and easier to pass. It can take 24-48 hours for the laxative effects to be evident. For PSE, Lactulose also creates an acidic environment in the colon which prevents absorbed ammonia from entering the bloodstream by turning it into ammonium ions. This prevents excess ammonia from building up in the body, and also causes urease-producing bacteria to be eliminated

Chronulac Toxicity & Overdose Risk

The toxic dose of lactulose in mice is 48.8 mL/kg and more than 30 mL/ kg in rats. If someone overdoses on lactulose, they may experience abdominal cramps and diarrhea and should be given fluids and electrolytes as needed. It is not known if lactulose is safe to take during pregnancy or while nursing, so caution should be used. Studies in rats, mice, and rabbits have not shown any effects on fertility. Not enough data exists to say if it is safe to use in children or if it causes long-term mutations or cancer.

Pelvic Health Rehabilitation for Breast and Gynecologic Cancer

18+
Female
Edmonton, Canada

The GYVE study aims at testing an online program (eModule) to help people who have had breast or gynecologic cancer and are experiencing pelvic health issues like urinary incontinence and pain during sex. These cancers and their treatments can cause significant pelvic health problems, affecting daily life and quality of life. Physiotherapy can help, but access is often limited due to costs and other barriers. The study will involve 20 participants from Quebec and Edmonton, who will take part in a 12-week program with weekly online group sessions led by a physiotherapist. Topics include pelvic floor muscle training, use of vaginal moisturizers, hydration, diet, and pain management. Led by experts in cancer rehabilitation and pelvic health, the study aims to provide valuable information on the feasibility and effectiveness of the eModule, potentially leading to broader implementation to help more people with lived experience of cancer.
