AmlodipineThe Generic name of this drug
Treatment SummaryAmlodipine is a medication used to treat high blood pressure and chest pain. It belongs to a class of drugs called dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers, which are known for having fewer side effects than other types of hypertension medications. Effectiveness

How Lotrel Affects PatientsAmlodipine helps reduce blood pressure by blocking certain calcium channels in the body. It is usually taken once daily and its effects last up to 24 hours. Taking this drug does not usually affect heart rate or blood pressure in people with chronic stable angina. Amlodipine also helps relieve chest pain associated with angina by increasing exercise time, decreasing the frequency of angina attacks, and lowering the need for nitroglycerin tablets.
How Lotrel works in the bodyAmlodipine is a type of drug that helps to lower blood pressure and reduce the symptoms of angina. It works by blocking the influx of calcium ions into both cardiac and vascular smooth muscle cells, causing them to relax and widen. This results in a decrease in total peripheral resistance and myocardial oxygen use, as well as an increase in myocardial oxygen delivery in areas with ischemia. Additionally, amlodipine can cause coronary vessels to widen, reducing coronary vasoconstriction.

Lotrel for High Blood Pressure
I've been using the generic Lotrel for hypertension for about five years now. My blood pressure usually falls within the "normal" range, but there are times when it spikes up higher than usual. I think it might be time to talk to my doctor about potentially trying a different medication.

Lotrel for High Blood Pressure
While this drug has lowered my blood pressure, I have experienced some severe side effects. These include swelling in my calves and feet, aching joints, muscle fatigue, and headaches. My urine has also changed coloration, which suggests to me that this medication is having a negative effect on my kidneys. I've been on the drug for four months now and am hopeful that my new doctor will be able to find a better solution for treating blood pressure without the use of Lotrel.
