What is Azopt
Brinzolamide
The Generic name of this drug
Treatment Summary
Brinzolamide is a medication used to reduce pressure in the eyes of patients with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma. It works by inhibiting the enzyme carbonic anhydrase, which helps to form bicarbonate ions that are responsible for transporting sodium and fluid in the eye. By reducing the formation of bicarbonate ions, Brinzolamide helps to lower intraocular pressure and relieve symptoms of glaucoma.

Effectiveness
How Azopt Affects Patients
Brinzolamide is a medication used to treat glaucoma. It works by reducing the amount of fluid in the eye, which helps to lower the pressure in the eye that can lead to vision loss. This drug can reduce eye pressure by up to 19% in people with high eye pressure.
How Azopt works in the body
Brinzolamide is used to reduce the pressure inside the eye. It does this by lowering the amount of sodium and fluid produced in the eye. When it is applied to the eye, brinzolamide is absorbed into the bloodstream and binds to red blood cells, where it reduces the activity of carbonic anhydrase II (CA-II). This slows down aqueous humor secretion, preventing the pressure from building up. Brinzolamide also produces a metabolite called N-desethyl brinzolamide, which binds mainly to carbonic anhydrase I (CA-I).
