What is Atrovent Hfa

IpratropiumThe Generic name of this drug
Treatment SummaryIpratropium is a medication used to treat breathing problems caused by narrowing of the airways. It works by blocking a specific type of nerve receptor and relaxing the airways, allowing for easier breathing. Ipratropium was first approved by the FDA in 1986 and is available as a single medication or in combination with albuterol. It is administered through inhalation, which allows it to work locally without being absorbed into the bloodstream.

Effectiveness

How Atrovent Hfa Affects PatientsIpratropium is a medication that helps to open up the airways in the lungs, making it easier to breathe and reducing wheezing and chest tightness. Its effect starts about 1-2 hours after taking it, and lasts for about 4-6 hours. In clinical studies, it has been shown to improve breathing in those suffering from asthma attacks, but taking it regularly or before an attack is not proven to be beneficial.
How Atrovent Hfa works in the bodyIpratropium blocks the effects of the parasympathetic nervous system in the airways, resulting in bronchial dilation and less mucus production. It does this by blocking the release of acetylcholine, a chemical that causes the airway muscles to contract and narrow. By blocking this chemical, the airways stay relaxed, allowing more air to flow through them.

When to interrupt dosage

The advocated dosage of Atrovent Hfa is contingent upon the ascertained condition, such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Asthma and Non-Allergic Rhinitis. The quantity of dosage fluctuates, in accordance with the administration technique featured in the table below.

Atrovent Hfa Toxicity & Overdose RiskThe toxic dose of ipratropium in mice, when taken orally, is 1500mg/kg. The chances of overdosing on ipratropium are low due to its poor absorption rate. Studies have also not found any evidence that ipratropium can cause cancer, birth defects, or gene mutation. High doses of ipratropium, however, may lower fertility rates.

Atrovent Hfa for Asthma
I've been using this for the last three months to help with a dry cough that was caused by mucus going down into my stomach. I've also been taking Rabeprazole (a small yellow tablet) twice daily, and it seems to be working. However, I'm concerned about the potential long-term side effects of using this spray, such as a dry mouth or pain in the sinus area. Are there any other people out there who have used this treatment for an extended period of time?

Xopenex/albuterol worked better and faster, but I developed vertigo, headaches and other side effects. Spiriva worked well, but kept me awake, so my doctor suggested Atrovent and it's great. I take inhaled steroids and use Atrovent when I exercise as well as every day. It stops my coughing and I have no side effects. The only time I needed to use Xopenex too was when I caught a chest cold.

When I took this as directed--two puffs, four times a day--I experienced an alarming increase in heart rate. Additionally, there was a weird taste that lingered on my tongue for hours, even after rinsing. Cutting back to one puff three or four times daily eliminated the fast heart beat issue; however, there still sometimes is a strange taste left behind even if I don't rinse immediately after taking the medication.

Patient Q&A Section about atrovent hfa

These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.

Is Atrovent HFA a rescue inhaler?

"Ipratropium bromide is a drug used to help keep airways open. It is not a rescue medication and takes about 15 minutes to start working."

Answered by AI

Is Atrovent a steroid inhaler?

"Atrovent is not a steroid. It is an anticholinergic, which is a medication that works differently than steroids to treat runny nose and allergies."

Answered by AI

Is Atrovent the same as albuterol?

"Atrovent and albuterol treat different conditions by relaxing airway muscles in different ways. Albuterol works faster so it should be used first if difficulty breathing or COPD attack is experienced."

Answered by AI

What is Atrovent HFA inhaler used for?

"Ipratropium is a medication used to relieve symptoms of COPD such as wheezing and shortness of breath. It works by relaxing the muscles in the airways to ease breathing."
