What is Chantix

VareniclineThe Generic name of this drug
Treatment SummaryVarenicline is a prescription drug used to help people quit smoking. It is a type of medicine called a nicotinic receptor partial agonist. This means it has special effects on certain types of receptors in the body. Varenicline can increase the risk of seizures and may cause people who drink alcohol while taking the drug to become aggressive or lose consciousness. Pfizer Inc is conducting a study to find out more about the safety of this drug, and the results will be released in late 2015. Until this study is completed, the FDA will keep a warning printed on the drug packaging.

Effectiveness

How Chantix Affects PatientsVarenicline is a drug designed to activate the parts of the brain that nicotine usually stimulates, while blocking nicotine from attaching to those parts.
How Chantix works in the bodyVarenicline is a drug that helps people quit smoking by attaching itself to the same receptors that nicotine attaches to in the brain. It is much weaker than nicotine, so it doesn't make you feel as good, but it helps reduce the urge to smoke and can help with withdrawal symptoms. It is highly selective, meaning it only affects certain receptors and not others, so it's safer than many other drugs.

Chantix for Stop Smoking
I was a 44 year smoker who had tried to quit many times before. I decided to try Champix and by the end of the first packet, I had stopped smoking. I only experienced side effects like feeling nauseous when thinking about cigarettes after day 8. I didn't even need the second month's dose but kept them on hand just in case. It's been 16 months since I've smoked and I don't even crave cigarettes when around other smokers

Chantix for Stop Smoking
I started chantix while I was in rehab for my nicotine addiction. I wanted to avoid becoming dependent on other nicotine replacement therapies like patches, so I decided to try this medication. It's been over two months now and I haven't smoked at all. I still have strong cravings occasionally, but this drug has definitely helped me kick my habit for good.

This medication was successful for me. I recommend getting a prescription for ativan from your doctor or psychiatrist to help with the depression and anxiety caused by chantix. I also suggest having Nicoderm patches on hand to deal with cravings.

Chantix for Stop Smoking
So far, this has been the most successful attempt I've made to quit smoking. I'm not experiencing nicotine cravings, and deep breathing has really helped with stress management. That said, I did have some nausea when taking the recommended two pills per day; cutting back to one pill has alleviated that issue.

All Sexes
Overland Park, KS
This study is a first-in-human clinical trial of drug ATI-1013, in healthy adult cigarette smokers. The main questions it aims to answer are to learn about the safety of drug ATI-1013, how long drug ATI-1013 remains within the body, does drug ATI-1013 trigger an immune response, and the effects of drug ATI-1013 on nicotine levels within the body. The clinical trial will compare drug ATI-1013 to a placebo (a look-alike substance that contains no drug) to see if drug ATI-1013 has comparable safety. Participants will have a Screening visit (Day -28 to -3) and will be admitted on Day -2. Each participant will receive one intravenous (IV) infusion of ATI-1013 or placebo (Day 1). Participants will remain in-clinic for at least 48 hours post-dose and return for follow-up visits on Days 7, 21, 42, 56, and 84, with telephone check-ins on Days 5, 14, 28, and 70. Participants will keep a diary of their cigarette use and smoking behaviors.

Rochester, MN
The purpose of this research is to assess the effectiveness of two treatment strategies for smoking cessation in patients with acute recurrent pancreatitis or chronic pancreatitis who smoke cigarettes. All participants will receive varenicline, a commonly used medication that helps people stop smoking, at its standard dose. For those who are unable to stop smoking after 6 weeks of treatment, they will be randomly selected to either 1) increase their dose of varenicline, 2) combine varenicline with bupropion (another medication that helps with smoking cessation) or continue on the standard dose of varenicline. At the end of 12 weeks of treatment, participants will be asked if they have stopped smoking with confirmation done by measuring carbon monoxide levels in their breath.

The goal of this clinical trial is to learn if a combination of varenicline and accelerated Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) works to help adults quit using nicotine products. Researchers will compare varenicline + active TMS to varenicline + sham (inactive) TMS to see the effect of TMS on reaching abstinence. The main question it aims to answer is: Does receiving active TMS + varenicline lead to higher abstinence rates and lower nicotine craving? Participants will be asked to: * Complete 2 brain MRI scans * Take varenicline every day for 12 weeks * Quit using nicotine products at the end of the second week of varenicline * Complete 5 consecutive days (Monday-Friday, uninterrupted) of TMS treatments * Complete 12 brief, weekly follow-up visits * Complete a brief daily survey each day that they take the study drug

Vaped Phenanthrene for Ex-Smokers

18+

Minneapolis, MN
Some people who used to smoke cigarettes continue to be at higher risk of developing lung cancer, even years after quitting. This study will look to see if a specific chemical, phenanthrene, is broken down in the lungs of former smokers through more harmful pathways than never-smokers. If former smokers break down chemicals that enter their lungs through more harmful pathways this might be putting them at higher risk for developing lung cancer even though they quit smoking. This information may help find better ways to prevent or treat cancer in the future. This study is under an IND, but the drug is not being studied; instead, it is being used as a marker for drug metabolism.

San Francisco, CA
Trauma-informed approaches have been shown to support recovery from other substance use disorders and involve four key elements: (1) Realizing the prevalence of trauma and pathways to recovery, (2) Recognizing symptoms of trauma, (3) Responding by embedding knowledge of trauma into practices and policies and (4) Resisting re-traumatization (the 4Rs). In close partnership with Breathe California and a public safety-net clinic in San Francisco that serves primarily racial and ethnic minoritized (REM) pregnant women, the 4Rs along with the Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist and Arrange (the 5As) evidence-based intervention for tobacco cessation that is delivered by health care professionals and is a US Public Health Services clinical practice guideline for treating tobacco will be used to create and implement a smoking cessation intervention for pregnant women with experiences of trauma.

Varenicline + Nicotine Lozenges for Smoking Cessation

18+
All Sexes
Oklahoma City, OK
Although the prevalence of smoking has declined among U.S. adults, smoking remains the leading preventable cause of cancer incidence and mortality. Quitting smoking increases life expectancy, and quitting at an earlier age is associated with more years of life gained. Effective pharmacotherapies to aid cessation are available, and the combination of behavioral support with pharmacotherapy optimizes cessation outcomes. Varenicline is an effective, first-line smoking cessation treatment, and recent research has investigated combination pharmacotherapy to improve the modest quit rates observed with monotherapy. The findings of two meta-analyses have indicated that varenicline combined with the nicotine patch was more effective than varenicline alone for smoking cessation However, no published studies to date have evaluated the combined impact of varenicline and oral nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) on smoking cessation in a randomized trial. Oral NRT, such as nicotine lozenges, can provide acute relief from cravings/withdrawal, and offers individuals the flexibility to deliver nicotine quickly, in contrast with the continuous, passive, and slow-acting delivery of the nicotine patch. Nevertheless, in clinical trials of other combination pharmacotherapies, participants' adherence to of oral NRT has been suboptimal, making it difficult to determine whether there is an added benefit. Given the near-ubiquity of smartphone ownership (85% of U.S. adults), it is plausible that smartphone-based medication adherence interventions could have a positive influence on pharmacotherapy adherence and smoking cessation. This investigative team has demonstrated the feasibility and potential efficacy of using combination varenicline plus oral NRT treatment to promote smoking cessation in a pilot factorial randomized trial. Likewise, pilot findings showed that medication adherence and smoking cessation rates were higher among those who received smartphone-based medication reminders than those who did not. The proposed study will enroll 496 adults who smoke cigarettes daily. The study will employ a 2x2 factorial design in which participants will be randomized to one of four combinations of two treatment factors: 1) pharmacological treatment (varenicline + nicotine lozenges vs. varenicline alone) and 2) smartphone medication adherence intervention (smartphone-based smoking cessation app with vs. without adherence components). The primary study outcomes will be biochemically-confirmed 7-day point prevalence abstinence at 26 weeks after a scheduled quit date, and medication adherence over the 13-week treatment period. Smartphone-based daily diaries will be employed to assess daily smoking and medication adherence. Notably, the proposed study will employ entirely remote assessment and treatment delivery strategies. Exploratory analyses will evaluate the potential interaction between medication type and the smartphone adherence intervention, and compare the influences of pharmacological treatment type and the medication adherence intervention on weekly physical symptoms (e.g., withdrawal, medication side effects). The overarching goal of the proposed research is to improve smoking cessation treatment and decrease cancer risk.
