What is Atacand

Candesartan cilexetilThe Generic name of this drug
Treatment SummaryCandesartan is a medication used to treat high blood pressure. It works by blocking the effects of a hormone called angiotensin II, which causes the blood vessels to narrow and increases the pressure in the arteries. Unlike some other medications for high blood pressure, Candesartan does not cause a dry cough. It can also be used to treat conditions such as left ventricular hypertrophy, diabetic nephropathy, heart failure, systolic dysfunction, and coronary artery disease.

Effectiveness

How Atacand Affects PatientsCandesartan cilexetil is a medicine that helps to lower blood pressure. It works by blocking the effects of a hormone called angiotensin II, which is released when blood pressure drops. This hormone causes your blood vessels to narrow, which increases your blood pressure. Candesartan cilexetil stops this from happening, allowing your blood vessels to relax and your blood pressure to stay low. Unlike other medicines, candesartan cilexetil does not affect the hormone bradykinin, which helps to keep your blood vessels relaxed and your blood pressure low.
How Atacand works in the bodyCandesartan helps lower blood pressure by blocking the binding of angiotensin II to one type of receptor in the body. This stops the body from constricting blood vessels and secreting aldosterone, which is a hormone that affects sodium, water, and potassium levels. Candesartan is very specific and only blocks the one receptor, rather than other receptors that are related.

Atacand for High Blood Pressure
I've had no issues with 8mg of this medication. I'm really pleased with it. However, my blood pressure jumped after two surgeries, so my doctor added Bystolic. I haven't been a fan of the new medication so far and have been having weird chest pains. Hopefully after I recover from surgery I can go back to just taking Atacand.

Atacand for High Blood Pressure
While this medication effectively lowers my blood pressure, I have experienced some negative side effects, such as back pain and hair loss.

Atacand for High Blood Pressure
I'm disappointed that the generic brand of candesartan is unavailable at most stores. The brand name is significantly more expensive, especially when we have to purchase it through mail order. Does anyone know what's causing this problem?

Atacand for High Blood Pressure
The information given when you buy this drug doesn't list all side effects. I took it for over three years and now have cirrhosis as a result. Be sure to do your research on potential side effects before taking any medication.

Atacand for High Blood Pressure
I've been on Atacand for three months and have noticed some troubling side effects. I get tired more easily and my hair has started thinning out. Additionally, I've developed pain in my chest and blocked ear canals. That said, the medication has successfully lowered by blood pressure.

Atacand for High Blood Pressure
I've only been taking Atacand for three months, and I've already started noticing joint pain in my hands. I don't know if it's the drug or not, but it has been effective in getting my blood pressure back to where it should be. I'm a little worried after reading other comments that users may have obtained liver & kidney damage due to this medication, so I'll be speaking to my GP about this when I see him next month for a follow up visit.

Atacand for Chronic Heart Failure
My systolic blood pressure is always high. I don't take any other medication and my pulse is usually 60. However, when I'm off the medication my systolic blood pressure rises to 150. I've tried taking 16mg but it doesn't seem to help so now I take 32mg at night.

Atacand for High Blood Pressure
I've been taking Atacand for about six months to keep my blood pressure down. It's effective, but now I have a burning sensation in my mouth. The pharmacist says this is due to the build-up of chemicals in the drug, but my doctor says not to worry. I've also noticed that my hair is thinning.

Atacand for High Blood Pressure
I've been on this medication for a few years now. It works some of the time, but my blood pressure is still not in the normal range. My doctor put me on atenolol, so we'll see if that helps.

Atacand for Chronic Heart Failure
I take 8mgs/day. I sometimes experience coughing, vertigo and itching. I started on a much cheaper generic, but it gave me a hacking cough 24/7.

Atacand for High Blood Pressure
After taking this medication, I feel incredibly tired and my stomach is upset. Based on these side effects, there's no way I'm going to up the dosage like my doctor suggested. If you're considering this treatment, make sure you advocate for yourself and really communicate how it makes you feel to your physician.

Atacand for Chronic Heart Failure
I had some serious problems while taking this drug, including shortness of breath and an inability to be active. The pharmacist told me that it was affecting my lungs, so I stopped taking it. Luckily, I've only lost 2kg and my blood pressure has only dropped 3 points.

Atacand for High Blood Pressure
More than three-fourths of my hair fell out as a result of taking this drug. I had to see a dermatologist to get to the bottom of what was going on, and they eventually determined it was caused by this medication. Thankfully, my hair started growing back after I stopped taking it.

Atacand for High Blood Pressure
I experienced a lot of side effects from this medication, to the point where I had to get an endoscopy. The doctors said that everything was fine, so I believe it was a side effect of the tablets. One of the side effects is having trouble swallowing food.
