Treatment Summary
Imiquimod is a medication used to treat warts on the genital and anal areas. It can also be used to treat a skin condition of the face and scalp called actinic keratoses, and certain types of skin cancer called superficial basal cell carcinoma. Imiquimod does not cure warts and new warts may appear during treatment, however, it does help to control their production by activating the body's own immune system.

How Aldara Affects Patients
Imiquimod is a drug used to treat warts on the skin in the genital and anal areas. It does not get rid of the virus that causes warts, but it helps to reduce and control wart production. It should not be used on warts inside the vagina, penis, or rectum. Imiquimod is also used for actinic keratoses, a skin condition on the face and scalp, and for certain types of skin cancer. It is especially helpful in treating areas of the body where surgery or other treatments may be hard, such as the face and lower legs.
How Aldara works in the body
Imiquimod works by stimulating the immune system to respond to the affected area. It does not have any direct antiviral activity, but it does increase the expression of certain cytokines and interleukins, which helps to bring cells such as lymphocytes, dendritic cells, and macrophages to the tumor site. This can lead to an inflammatory response and eventual apoptosis of the diseased tissue. In the treatment of basal cell carcinoma, Imiquimod is believed to act as an immune system modulator and trigger apoptosis in the cancer cells.
When to interrupt dosage
The prescribed dosage of Aldara is contingent upon the diagnosed condition, such as Communicable Diseases, Face and Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma. The quantity of dosage fluctuates as per the delivery technique (e.g. Cream - Topical or Topical) detailed in the table beneath.
