What is Accuretic

HydrochlorothiazideThe Generic name of this drug
Treatment SummaryHydrochlorothiazide is a prescription medication used to treat swelling caused by excess fluid and high blood pressure. It is the most commonly prescribed thiazide diuretic, though its popularity has been declining in favor of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors. Hydrochlorothiazide is often combined with other medications, such as angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers. The drug was approved by the FDA in 1959.

Effectiveness

How Accuretic Affects PatientsHydrochlorothiazide helps the body get rid of excess water by blocking the reabsorption of sodium and water in the kidneys. The usual dose is between 25-100mg and may vary depending on the person. It should be used with caution in those with reduced kidney or liver function.
How Accuretic works in the bodyHydrochlorothiazide works by blocking sodium-chloride reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule. Sodium is normally reabsorbed into cells and pumped into the surrounding tissue, creating a concentration gradient that draws water back into the cells. Hydrochlorothiazide disrupts this process, reducing the concentration gradient and blocking water from being reabsorbed. This results in an increased amount of sodium and water being released from the body.

When to interrupt dosage

The prescribed measure of Accuretic is contingent upon the determined condition, including Antepartum magnesium sulfate prophylaxis, inadequately regulated blood pressure with monotherapy and antihypertensives. The dosage fluctuates, in accordance with the method of delivery (e.g. Tablet, coated - Oral or Oral) noted in the table beneath.
