Treatment Summary

Atorvastatin (Lipitor®) is a type of medication called a statin, used to lower cholesterol levels in the blood. It works by blocking an enzyme in the liver that is involved in the production of cholesterol and other lipids, such as low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL). Statins are often prescribed to people who have had a cardiovascular event, such as a heart attack or stroke, or for those at moderate to high risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Studies have shown that taking statins can reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events

How Liptruzet Affects Patients

Atorvastatin is a medication used to lower cholesterol levels. It reduces the amount of LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol in the blood, while increasing levels of HDL cholesterol. High levels of LDL cholesterol and low levels of HDL cholesterol increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis. Atorvastatin has been shown to reduce LDL cholesterol levels by 36-53%. It may also be used to reduce the risk of chronic subdural hematoma. However, atorvastatin can cause myopathy, which is muscle pain or tenderness and a rise in creatine kinase (CK) levels. There is also

How Liptruzet works in the body

Atorvastatin is a cholesterol-lowering drug that works by blocking an enzyme in the liver. This action reduces the amount of cholesterol in the blood and increases the amount of good cholesterol. It also lowers the levels of triglycerides, which are another type of fat in the blood. Atorvastatin also has other benefits, known as pleiotropic effects. These effects help protect the blood vessels and reduce inflammation. Atorvastatin also binds to a protein that is involved in immune system responses.

Liptruzet Toxicity & Overdose Risk

The most toxic dose of atorvastatin in mice is higher than 5000mg/kg. Those who overdose on atorvastatin may experience difficulty breathing, yellowing of the skin, liver damage, dark urine, muscle pain, and seizures. Treatment for these symptoms should be provided, and dialysis is not expected to be effective due to the drug's high levels of protein binding. High doses of atorvastatin may be linked to certain types of cancer, infertility, and abnormal sperm. However, it has not been shown to be mutagenic.

Liptruzet for High Cholesterol

I had to stop taking this medication after just three weeks because the pain in my legs was becoming unbearable. I'm currently dealing with leg drop, and can't even walk without severe pain. I'm hoping that a MRI will help us understand the extent of the damage.

Cooking Intervention for Heart Disease

18 - 99
All Sexes
Bethesda, MD

Background: The risk of heart disease among African Americans is still common despite a greater understanding of the disease and better approaches to managing it. Healthy cooking and eating patterns can help reduce the risk of heart disease. But things like access to grocery stores and knowledge of good nutrition can affect these healthy patterns. Researchers want to see if community-based programs can help. Objective: To learn about the cooking behaviors of African American adults at risk for heart disease. Also, to see if a community-based cooking intervention will affect home-cooking behaviors. Eligibility: African American adults 18 and older who live in Wards 7 and 8 of Washington, D.C., and have at least one self-reported risk factor for heart disease Design: Phase I participants will complete a survey. It asks about their medical history, lifestyle, stress level, and eating habits. They will take part in a focus group. During this, they will talk about what they eat and what foods are available to them. Participation lasts 1 day for 3 hours at Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. Phase II participants will go to shared cooking events at Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church. These will be held once a week for 6 weeks. They will be led by a trained chef. Participants will visit the NIH Clinical Center 3 times. Transportation will be provided if they need it. They will have physical exams and have blood drawn. They will be interviewed and complete questionnaires. A dietician will review the food they eat. An occupational therapist will assess their cooking skills. They will keep a daily cooking journal. Participation lasts 18 weeks.
