Effectiveness

How Paragard T 380A Affects PatientsCopper is an important part of many enzymes in the body. However, too much copper can have a negative effect on fertility, especially when it is released from copper-containing IUDs.
How Paragard T 380A works in the bodyCopper is an important mineral that helps many enzymes in the body work properly. It is absorbed in the gut, and then transported to the golgi apparatus of cells. While in the body, it binds to proteins like ceruloplasmin, albumin, and alpha-2-macroglobulin. Copper is also used as a cofactor in enzymes that help connective tissue develop. A lack of copper can lead to serious conditions like Occipital Horn Syndrome and Menke's Disease, both of which can cause neurological impairment and death. Copper can also reduce the viability and motility of sperm, which is how it works

Paragard T 380A for Birth Control
I just received Paraguard this morning and my review is for insertion. It was not as bad as I have read. A mild to moderate cramp and it was over. On scale of 1-10 I’d say a 2/3. It was not bad at all. I would note that I took 3 aleve 1 hr before appointment and was on my period. I have 1 child age 22. I will give another review as time goes on how I like it. But so far so good, only mild cramping since this morning..

Paragard T 380A for Birth Control
I was looking for a non-hormonal option for birth control and found this. The insertion process was painful, but it was worth it. I haven't had any issues with side effects like crazy bleeding or weight gain, and my acne has cleared up.

Paragard T 380A for Birth Control
I had the copper IUD for almost 2 years and it was my favorite! The only reason why i got off of it was because I was an athlete in college at the time and couldn't afford to deal with the heavy cramping and bleeding but I think now that I have a more sedentary lifestyle, I'd go back!I will note that for my periods I use "regular" tampons on my heavy days but on the paragard, I used the super ultra heavy tampons or whatever for like 8 days lol

Paragard T 380A for Birth Control
The only benefit I experienced was that I did not get pregnant. However, the insertion process was extremely painful. The periods I experienced were also horrible and very painful. In addition, I bled so much that I became iron deficient and dizzy. Intercourse was also quite painful. Overall, I would NOT recommend this product to anyone.

Paragard T 380A for Birth Control
My experience with a copper IUD was really terrible. It caused me all sorts of problems like daily pain, brain fog, and severe food sensitivities. My body eventually expelled it, but not completely so I had to have surgery to get the rest of it out.

Paragard T 380A for Birth Control
The pain three days after insertion was unbearable. It was worse than childbirth contractions. I had to get it removed on May 11th and since then, I've been constantly bleeding. It's very draining both physically and emotionally. Do not get this form of birth control!

Paragard T 380A for Birth Control
I had a really negative experience with the Copper IUD. The cramping after it was fitted was terrible, and I've been dealing with non-stop flooding for three weeks now. My surgery is removing it tomorrow, and I'm just hoping that things will go back to normal afterwards.

TENS Unit for Pain Relief During IUD Insertion

12 - 50
Female
Boston, MA
Subjects will be screened over the phone or in Tufts GYN clinic for participation in the study. If eligible and interested in participating, written informed consent (and assent if applicable) will be obtained. After informed consent/assent, the patient will be enrolled in the study. The patient will decide if they desire to use TENS unit during IUD insertion appointment and inform the study team. The clinic visit will proceed as normal, with additional study proceedings as follows. The study personnel will complete the 'Background Questionnaire' with the patient prior to IUD insertion. During the IUD insertion appointment, study personnel will assist in collection of the 'Study visit' data collection form. This includes recording the patient's pain score at various time points throughout the insertion procedure: * anticipated pain during IUD insertion * baseline pain prior to insertion * speculum insertion * tenaculum placement * paracervical block administration (if performed) * cervical dilation (if performed) * uterine sounding * IUD insertion * 5 minutes after IUD insertion Study personnel will also time the insertion procedure and collect additional data as outlined in the 'Study visit data collection form.' After IUD insertion, the participant will be asked to complete the 'Post-IUD Insertion Survey.' Once this survey is complete, this will conclude the study participation. Participation will last through the study visit only. As part of the standard of care, a urine pregnancy test will be obtained and confirmed negative prior to IUD insertion. Patients will receive routine pain management modalities per shared decision-making with their clinical provider which may include NSAID administration, paracervical block, and heating pad.

Etonogestrel Implant + Levonorgestrel for Emergency Contraception

18 - 35
Female
Salt Lake City, UT
Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are highly effective to prevent pregnancy when used for emergency contraception (following unprotected intercourse in the last 3 days), but data are lacking for people who desire an etonogestrel (ENG) contraceptive implant in this situation. This proposal will identify the most effective way to start an implant for emergency contraception using a randomized controlled trial comparing pregnancy risk between those receiving the implant vs. the implant plus oral emergency contraception (EC). Data from this project will inform clinical practice and add another option, the implant, for those desiring a long acting, highly effective contraceptive method when they present for emergency contraception.
