What is Trimox

TrimethoprimThe Generic name of this drug
Treatment SummarySulfamethoxazole is an antibiotic that stops bacteria from growing. It is usually combined with trimethoprim, which blocks the production of proteins and nucleic acids essential for bacterial growth. Effectiveness

How Trimox Affects PatientsSulfamethoxazole is an antibiotic that works by preventing bacteria from making a specific type of folate, a type of vitamin. It is usually given with trimethoprim, another antibiotic, as the combination works better and takes longer for bacteria to become resistant to it. However, sulfamethoxazole can lead to skin reactions such as rashes, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, or toxic epidermal necrolysis, so if any of these occur it should be stopped immediately. Additionally, taking sulfamethoxazole may cause folate deficiency and it should be used cautiously in those at risk.
How Trimox works in the bodySulfamethoxazole prevents bacteria from making folic acid. It works by mimicking a molecule called para-aminobenzoic acid, which bacteria normally use to make folic acid. By taking its place, sulfamethoxazole blocks the enzyme that converts para-aminobenzoic acid into folic acid. This stops bacteria from making the DNA and other molecules that it needs for growth and reproduction, which prevents the bacteria from spreading.

When to interrupt dosage

The sum of Trimox is dependent upon the diagnosed state, including Urinary tract infection, Pneumocystis Jirovecii Pneumonia and Fluid replacement therapy. The quantity of dosage can be determined from the table below, contingent upon the method of administration.
