Treatment Summary
Testosterone enanthate is a form of testosterone that is injected into the body and released slowly over time. It was first approved for medical use in 1953 and is now commonly used to treat low testosterone levels. In 2017, 6.5 million prescriptions were filled for testosterone therapy, most of them being injectable or topical forms of the hormone. In 2018, the FDA approved Xyosted, a once-weekly testosterone enanthate product designed to be self-administered with a single dose, disposable autoinjector. This new formulation removes the need for frequent visits to the clinic for injections.

How Testosterone Enanthate Affects Patients
Taking testosterone enanthate can raise the amount of testosterone in the body up to four times the normal level within 24 hours. After this initial increase, the levels of testosterone stay higher than normal for 3-5 days. Taking testosterone enanthate regularly can suppress levels of dihydrotestosterone, PSA, HDL and FSH, and also slightly raise the level of estradiol in the body. The suppression of dihydrotestosterone and FSH can last up to 14 days after stopping treatment. There is no effect on mood or sexual activity from taking testosterone enanthate.
How Testosterone Enanthate works in the body
Testosterone affects the body in two ways. It can either bind to the androgen receptor directly, or it can be converted to DHT, which binds more strongly to the receptor. This binding triggers a reaction in the cell nucleus, which affects certain genes and causes physical changes, like hair growth and increased muscle mass. Testosterone is also responsible for the growth and development of male organs and body parts. Low levels of testosterone can lead to male hypogonadism, which is caused either by problems with the gonads or with the hypothalamus or pituitary gland.
