How Hydroxyzine Pamoate Affects Patients
Hydroxyzine helps reduce symptoms of allergies such as itching, and can also be used as a sedative and anti-nausea medication. It usually starts working within 15-60 minutes and can last for 4-6 hours. It may increase the effects of other medicines that cause drowsiness, so patients should be carefully monitored after receiving general anesthesia. Hydroxyzine can also interfere with the heart's electrical activity, which can lead to serious heart problems, so it should be used cautiously in those with an increased risk of such problems.
How Hydroxyzine Pamoate works in the body
Hydroxyzine is a medicine used to treat allergic reactions. It works by blocking the histamine H1 receptor, which is responsible for causing allergic symptoms like itching, sneezing, and watery eyes. Hydroxyzine also has sedative and anti-nausea effects, which are thought to come from blocking other receptors in the body.

Hydroxyzine Pamoate Toxicity & Overdose Risk
The lowest toxic dose of hydroxyzine in rats has been found to be 840 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg in mice. Symptoms of overdose include excessive sedation, seizures, confusion, nausea, and vomiting. Treatment involves inducing vomiting and providing general supportive care. Low blood pressure may be treated with intravenous fluids, and caffeine and sodium benzoate can be administered to reduce the effects of CNS depressants. Dialysis is unlikely to help with hydroxyzine overdose.

These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.
What is hydroxyzine pamoate used for?
"Hydroxyzine is used to treat itching resulting from allergies. By blocking histamine, it functions as an antihistamine to alleviate allergic reactions."
Answered by AI
Is hydroxyzine pamoate the same as Xanax?
"These drugs work by different mechanisms, but both have anti-anxiety effects.
The drugs Vistaril and Xanax are both used to treat anxiety, though they work via different mechanisms. Vistaril is an antihistamine with drying and sedative properties, while Xanax is a benzodiazepine. Though their means of anxious relief differ, both drugs are effective."
Answered by AI
Is hydroxyzine pamoate good for anxiety?
"Vistaril is used as a short-term treatment for anxiety symptoms or as an alternative to habit-forming anxiety medications such as benzodiazepines. It is also prescribed as an antihistamine to treat skin allergies, so it can be a good choice for people who have both allergies and anxiety."
Answered by AI
