Ibuprofen is a common medication used to reduce pain and inflammation. It was first developed in 1960 as a safer alternative to aspirin and was approved for use in the UK in 1969 and in the US in 1974. It is a type of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and is available over-the-counter. Ibuprofen is a racemic mixture, meaning that it is made up of two enantiomers. The S-enantiomer is thought to be more effective than the R-enantiomer at providing relief from pain and inflammation.

How Neoprofen Affects Patients

Ibuprofen is a painkiller and fever reducer used to reduce inflammation in acute and chronic conditions. It is most commonly used to reduce pain, fever, and inflammation by blocking the production of substances (prostanoids) that cause these symptoms. Ibuprofen can also reduce pain by affecting the central nervous system and increasing the production of endorphins. It is used in dental procedures to reduce inflammation, swelling, and pain. Ibuprofen may be taken to reduce joint pain caused by rheumatic diseases, reduce menstrual pain, reduce fever and pain caused by migraines, and reduce neurodegeneration.

How Neoprofen works in the body

We don't know exactly how ibuprofen works, but we think it blocks certain enzymes called cyclooxygenases. These enzymes make pain and fever mediators called prostaglandins. Blocking these enzymes reduces inflammation, pain, fever, and swelling. Ibuprofen blocks two types of cyclooxygenases: COX-1 and COX-2. Blocking COX-2 is what reduces inflammation but blocking COX-1 can lead to side effects like stomach ulcers.

Overdosing on ibuprofen may cause abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, lethargy, dizziness, insomnia, headaches, loss of consciousness, ringing in the ears, confusion, seizures, and difficulty breathing. In rare cases, it may also lead to metabolic acidosis, abnormal liver function, high levels of potassium in the blood, kidney failure, and coma (especially in very young children). Oxygen Concentration for Premature Birth

This study is trying to figure out the best amount of oxygen to give preterm babies (born between 32 and 35 weeks) right after birth. In the past, doctors used high levels of oxygen, but research has shown that using lower levels might help reduce the risk of death in full-term babies without harming brain development. However, we don't know the best oxygen level for babies born a little early (32 to 35 weeks). Some early data suggests that giving lower oxygen levels (FiO2 0.3) may not help babies reach healthy oxygen levels by 5 minutes after birth. This study will compare three oxygen levels-FiO2 0.6, FiO2 0.3, and air (FiO2 0.21)-to see which helps babies breathe better and need less ongoing breathing support. Researchers will study over 1,100 babies in hospitals across Alberta, Canada, to find the safest approach for these babies.
