Dexamethasone (MK-125) is a type of steroid that was developed in 1957 and approved by the FDA in 1958. It is used to treat a wide range of conditions, including endocrine, rheumatic, collagen, dermatologic, allergic, ophthalmic, gastrointestinal, respiratory, hematologic, neoplastic, edematous, and others. In 2020, a clinical trial recommended the use of dexamethasone for COVID-19 patients with severe respiratory symptoms, as it was found to reduce deaths by one third in those requiring ventilation and by one fifth in those requiring oxygen.

How Hexadrol Affects Patients

Corticosteroids are drugs that reduce inflammation by blocking certain signals from being sent to the body. The amount of time these drugs stay in the body depends on how they are taken. As the amount of corticosteroids people need to take is usually more than what their bodies naturally produce, they have a wide therapeutic window. It is important to warn people taking corticosteroids that they are at risk for their body's natural hormone system being suppressed and for getting infections more easily.

How Hexadrol works in the body

Corticosteroids reduce inflammation in the body by decreasing the activity of certain proteins and genes. This helps to shrink blood vessels and reduce the number of white blood cells going to the site of inflammation. Low doses of corticosteroids work to reduce inflammation and high doses can suppress your immune system. Taking glucocorticoids over a long period of time can cause an increase in sodium levels and a decrease in potassium levels.

Hexadrol Toxicity & Overdose Risk

In mice, the toxic dose of this drug taken orally is 6.5g/kg and intravenously is 794mg/kg. Taking too much of this drug over a long period of time can cause cataracts, glaucoma, high blood pressure, water retention, high cholesterol, ulcers, pancreatitis, muscle weakness, mood swings, psychosis, thinning of the skin, allergies, acne, increased body hair, reduced resistance to infections, facial swelling, high blood sugar, low calcium levels, low phosphorous levels, and slowed growth.
