It is used to reduce inflammation caused by arthritis and to treat certain types of cancer such as breast cancer and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Methotrexate is given only if other treatments for arthritis or severe psoriasis have not worked or the patient is unable to tolerate those treatments. The FDA approved methotrexate in 1953.

How Methotrexate Sodium Affects PatientsMethotrexate stops the body from making certain proteins that cells need to divide, which in turn reduces inflammation. It produces long-lasting effects and is usually taken once a week. Methotrexate is a strong drug, so it should not be taken every day.
How Methotrexate Sodium works in the bodyMethotrexate works by stopping cells from making the molecules they need to divide. It does this by blocking key enzymes that make the molecules. In rheumatoid arthritis, methotrexate also stimulates anti-inflammatory action in the body. This is done by blocking an enzyme, which leads to a build-up of a molecule that then stimulates receptors that reduce inflammation.
When to interrupt dosage
The proposed measure of Methotrexate Sodium is contingent upon the distinguished condition, including Uveitis, Polymyositis and nonleukemic meningeal cancer. The measurement of dosage is contingent upon the method of delivery as laid out in the table beneath.Condition

Methotrexate Sodium Toxicity & Overdose RiskThe lowest toxic dose of methotrexate in rats has been found to be 135mg/kg, and 146mg/kg in mice. An overdose can cause a decrease in white blood cells, platelets, and red blood cells, as well as mucosal irritation, mouth ulcers, nausea, vomiting, stomach ulcers, and bleeding. Patients should be treated with glucarpidase, and not leucovorin, if an overdose occurs.

4/19/2018 I've been on methotrexate for a long time now and I really don't like it. It gives me a lot of pain in my bones and joints, and I get cold very easily.
