What is Hycodan

HydrocodoneThe Generic name of this drug
Treatment SummaryHydrocodone is an opioid medication used to relieve moderate to severe pain. It is often combined with acetaminophen for better pain relief. In the past, hydrocodone was used as a cough suppressant, but it has been replaced by dextromethorphan in cough and cold medicines. Its metabolite, hydromorphone, is sometimes given to treat severe pain. Hydrocodone was first approved by the FDA in 1943 as part of the cough suppressant syrup Hycodan.

Effectiveness

How Hycodan Affects PatientsHydrocodone reduces pain signals sent to both the brain and spinal cord. It can also cause feelings of happiness, slower breathing, and sleepiness.
How Hycodan works in the bodyHydrocodone works by binding to two types of opioid receptors, mu and delta. The mu receptor produces most of the drug's pain relieving effects. When hydrocodone binds to these receptors, it causes nerve cells in the spinal cord to become more relaxed. This dampens pain signals from reaching the brain. Hydrocodone also binds to opioid receptors in the brain and can reduce pain signals from reaching the brain. This drug also blocks inhibitory signals from an area in the brain called the periaquaductal gray, which reduces pain signals from reaching the brain. Hydrocodone also can increase dopamine levels in

Hycodan Toxicity & Overdose RiskTaking too much hydrocodone can lead to an opioid overdose, which can cause breathing difficulty, drowsiness, unconsciousness, weak muscles, cold and clammy skin, small pupils, fluid in the lungs, slow heart rate, low blood pressure, blocked airways, and death. In case of an overdose, the main priority is to keep the airway open and provide assisted breathing if necessary. Other treatments may include fluids, oxygen, and drugs to increase blood pressure. Cardiac arrest or arrhythmias may require advanced life support. Naloxone can be used to reverse the effects of hydrocodone,

Hycodan for Cough
This cough medicine was incredibly effective, to the point where my cough was completely gone. However, I started experiencing itchiness all over my body, and while it made me feel sleepy, I kept waking up every 15-20 minutes. It's a shame that I won't be able to use this medication anymore.

Hycodan for Cough
This bronchitis medicine was a godsend. I couldn't sleep at all the night before I started taking it, but within 20 minutes of my first dose I found myself feeling so much better. It's also affordable, which is great because my insurance won't cover any cough medicines. Overall, would highly recommend this medication to anyone else suffering from bronchitis!

Patient Q&A Section about hycodan

These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.

Does Hycodan have hydrocodone in it?

"…a semisynthetic opioid antitussive that acts on the central nervous system."

Answered by AI

What class of drug is Hycodan?

"Opioids are drugs that have a high potential for abuse and dependence. Hydrocodone bitartrate and homatropine methylbromide (Hycodan) is a Schedule III opioid, meaning it has a high potential for abuse but also has legitimate medical uses."

Answered by AI

Is Hycodan and hydrocodone the same?

"Many drugs are commonly prescribed for off label indications in veterinary medicine.

Hydrocodone bitartrate, marketed under the brand names Tussigon®, Hycodan®, Vicodin®, Norco®, and Lortabs®, is an opiate agonist used to treat pain and cough in dogs. Its use in dogs to treat pain and cough is 'off label' or 'extra-label'. Many drugs are commonly prescribed for off label indications in veterinary medicine."
