Treatment Summary
Glipizide is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. It was introduced in 1984 and is available in the U.S. and Canada. Glipizide is a second-generation sulfonylurea drug, which helps control blood sugar levels by reducing the amount of glucose in the body. It is typically used in early-stage type 2 diabetes when pancreatic failure has not occurred. Glipizide is absorbed quickly and has a short duration of action, which helps reduce the risk of long-term hypoglycemia. It is available in extended-release tablets under the brand name Glucotrol,

How Glucotrol Xl Affects Patients
Glipizide is a drug that helps to lower blood sugar. It begins working about 30 minutes after taking it and its effects can last for up to 24 hours. It is known to increase the body's response to insulin and can help with glucose uptake in the muscles and liver. However, it can also lead to low blood sugar and weight gain with long-term use. It may also cause the pancreas to produce less insulin over time, as well as have other effects outside the pancreas. These include decreasing lipolysis in the liver and fat tissue, reducing glucose production in the liver, and increasing glucose uptake and
How Glucotrol Xl works in the body
Glipizide is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. It works by stimulating the release of insulin from cells in the pancreas, which helps lower the amount of glucose in the blood. It does this by binding to the sulfonylurea receptor on the cell surface, and then closing the cell's potassium channels and opening calcium channels. This causes the cell to release insulin granules, which helps lower blood glucose levels. Glipizide also helps to increase the number and sensitivity of insulin receptors, allowing more glucose to be taken up by cells in the liver. In addition to this medication, lifestyle changes such as

Glucotrol Xl Toxicity & Overdose Risk
In tests, rats have been found to tolerate a dose of up to 4000 mg/kg when taken orally, and up to 1200 mg/kg when taken through the abdomen. The smallest amount of glipizide to cause toxicity in a child is 379 μg/kg. If an overdose occurs, the patient may experience a coma, seizure, or other neurological issues due to severe hypoglycemia. Immediate treatment with glucagon or intravenous glucose is necessary, and medical attention should be sought for at least 24-48 hours since hypoglycemia may happen again. Mild hypoglycemic symptoms can be treated with oral glucose.
