Treatment Summary
Drospirenone is a synthetic hormone found in oral contraceptives such as Yaz. It is used to prevent pregnancy and also to treat acne and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) when used in combination with estrogen. There has been some concern that drospirenone may increase the risk of venous thromboembolism, however the FDA concluded that this risk is unclear and may be lower than the risk during pregnancy or after birth.

How Drospirenone Affects Patients
Drospirenone works by stopping the ovaries from releasing eggs, preventing pregnancy. It can also improve acne and hirsutism by blocking the effects of certain hormones. Taking drospirenone combined with ethinyl estradiol has been found to have beneficial effects on cholesterol levels. As it is similar to the hormone progesterone, drospirenone is believed to cause fewer side effects related to progesterone, such as breast tenderness and mood changes. However, drospirenone may increase the risk of blood clots and cardiovascular issues, especially in smokers and women aged 35 and older. Additionally, this drug may
How Drospirenone works in the body
Drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol work together to prevent pregnancy. They do this by stopping the release of hormones that trigger ovulation and by altering the consistency of the cervical mucus to block sperm movement. Drospirenone also has anti-mineralocorticoid activity, which helps reduce the effects of naturally occurring androgens. This helps treat acne and hirsutism, as well as reducing the levels of edema in sebaceous follicles.

The lowest toxic dose of drospirenone in rats is greater than 2000mg/kg. Signs of an overdose include nausea and abnormal bleeding. It may also cause changes in the levels of sodium and potassium in the blood, as well as a buildup of acid in the blood and high levels of potassium. These should be monitored closely if an overdose occurs.

Patient Q&A Section about drospirenone
These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.
Is Yaz the same as drospirenone?
"The drugs Yaz and Yasmin are birth control pills that contain the combination of two hormones, drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. These drugs are used to prevent pregnancy by stopping the ovaries from releasing eggs."
Answered by AI
Does drospirenone cause weight gain?
"Drospirenone/ethinyl estradiol birth control may cause weight gain in some women due to water retention and changes to your appetite. This weight gain is usually the result of water retention and often reverses when you discontinue the medication."
Answered by AI
What does drospirenone do to the body?
"Progestin-only oral contraceptives are used to prevent pregnancy. Progestin is a female hormone that works by preventing the release of eggs from the ovaries (ovulation) and changing the cervical mucus and the lining of the uterus."
