What is Baqsimi

GlucagonThe Generic name of this drug
Treatment SummaryGlucagon is a hormone made up of 29 amino acids that is used to slow down the movement of food through the digestive system or to raise low blood sugar levels. It works by activating receptors in the liver, which then triggers the breakdown of glycogen and the release of glucose into the bloodstream. It was approved by the FDA in 1960 and is used as a diagnostic aid in certain radiological exams.

Effectiveness

How Baqsimi Affects PatientsGlucagon is used as a test to slow down the movement of the digestive system and to treat dangerously low blood sugar levels. It works by activating certain receptors in the liver, which causes the body to release glucose and raise blood sugar. The effects of glucagon are short-lived, but can lead to high blood sugar levels in diabetic patients.
How Baqsimi works in the bodyGlucagon binds to its receptor and triggers a chain reaction in the body. Adenylate cyclase is activated, which increases the amount of cyclic AMP. Protein kinase A is also activated, which breaks down glycogen. Glucagon also relaxes the muscles of the stomach, duodenum, small bowel and colon.
