Effectiveness

How Atropine Sulfate Affects PatientsAtropine is a drug that blocks the effects of the chemical acetylcholine. It is usually used to slow down the heart rate, and can also help with breathing problems by widening the airways. Atropine is also used to stop eye muscle spasms, which can cause pupil dilation. However, it should be used with caution as it can cause glaucoma, complete blockage in the stomach, total urinary retention in those with prostate issues, and mucus build up in the lungs of those with chronic lung disease.
How Atropine Sulfate works in the bodyAtropine blocks the effects of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger in your body, by stopping it from binding to its receptors. It stops acetylcholine from affecting parts of your body like muscles, heart, glands and the nervous system. The effects of atropine can be countered by increasing the amount of acetylcholine in your body.

When to interrupt dosage

The proposed measure of Atropine Sulfate is contingent upon the ascertained condition, comprising Bronchospasm, Bile fluid and Muscle Hypertonia. The amount of dosage can be found in the table below, contingent upon the manner of delivery (e.g. Oral or Injection - Intramuscular).

Atropine Sulfate Toxicity & Overdose RiskTaking too much atropine can cause a rapid heartbeat, dilated pupils, difficulty swallowing, hot skin, dizziness, restlessness, tremors, fatigue, and problems with coordination. More severe reactions may include confusion, hallucinations, delirium, and coma. Treatment for atropine overdose includes supportive care and artificial respiration with oxygen. Other treatments may include cooling methods to reduce fever, catheterization for difficulty with urination, and administering a short-acting barbiturate or diazepam to control excitement. The lethal dose of atropine in mice has been estimated to be 75mg/kg.

Patient Q&A Section about atropine sulfate

These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.

What is atropine sulfate used for?

"Atropine sulfate eye drops wide the pupil before eye exams. It also treats amblyopia (lazy eyes) and other eye conditions (eg, cycloplegia)."

Answered by AI

What has atropine been used to treat?

"Atropine is a prescription medicine used to treat the symptoms of low heart rate, reduce salivation and bronchial secretions before surgery, or as an antidote for overdose of cholinergic drugs or mushroom poisoning. Atropine may be used alone or with other medications."

Answered by AI

What is the intended action of atropine sulfate?

"Atropine sulfate injection is used to temporarily block severe or life-threatening effects of muscarine, such as an increase in saliva, an increase in stomach acid, and slowed heart rate. It is also used as an antidote for poisonings from organophosphorus or muscarinic mushrooms, and to treat a type of cardiac arrest where the heart rate is slow."

Answered by AI

What does atropine sulfate do to the heart?

"Atropine boosts the heart rate and makes the heart's electrical signals travel more effectively by blocking signals from the part of the nervous system that slows heart rate."
