The Generic name of this drug
Treatment Summary
Amphotericin B is a medication used to treat fungal infections. It is especially effective against Histoplasma capsulatum, Coccidioides immitis, Blastomyces dermatitidis, and Cryptococcus neoformans, with concentrations ranging from 0.03 to 1.0 mcg/mL in vitro. Candida albicans is generally very susceptible to amphotericin B, but other species may be less so. Pseudallescheria boydii and Fusarium sp. are often resistant to the antibiotic. It has no effect on bacteria, viruses, or rickettsiae.

Effectiveness
How Amphotericin B Affects Patients
Amphotericin B is a drug that is effective against many types of fungi, including Histoplasma capsulatum, Coccidioides immitis, Candida species, and more. It generally works well against Candida albicans but isn't as effective against other non-albicans species. Pseudallescheria boydii and Fusarium sp. are usually resistant to it. This drug does not work against bacteria, rickettsiae, or viruses.
How Amphotericin B works in the body
Amphotericin B is an antifungal drug that works by targeting and damaging the cell membrane of certain fungi. It binds to the sterols in the cell membrane, which disturbs the membrane and causes it to leak, leading to the death of the cell. Ergosterol, a type of sterol found in fungal cell membranes, is the primary target of amphotericin B.
When to interrupt dosage
The prescribed dosage of Amphotericin B is contingent upon the determined condition, such as Aspergillosis, serious Cryptococcosis and serious Mucocutaneous leishmaniasis. The amount of dosage can be found in the table below, based on the method of delivery.

Patient Q&A Section about amphotericin b
These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.
What is amphotericin B mode of action?
"The way that Amphotericin B works is by binding to ergosterol in the fungal cell membrane. This creates pores that allow ions to escape, leading to the death of the fungal cell."
Answered by AI
What is amphotericin B used for?
"Amphotericin B injection is primarily used to treat serious and potentially life-threatening fungal infections. This medication works by slowing the growth of fungi that cause infection, making it an effective antifungal."
Answered by AI
Is amphotericin B an antibiotic or antifungal?
"Amphotericin B is an antibiotic that is considered the best option for treating life-threatening fungal infections. There are several proposed explanations for why it is so effective against fungi."
Answered by AI
What are the major adverse effects of amphotericin B?
"Fever and chills, headache, increased or decreased urination, irregular heartbeat, muscle cramps or pain, nausea, pain at the place of injection, unusual tiredness or weakness."
