What is Actiq

FentanylThe Generic name of this drug
Treatment SummaryFentanyl is a powerful opioid painkiller developed in the 1950s for the treatment of severe pain and anesthesia. It is similar to morphine and oxycodone, and is commonly used in cancer patients and those who have undergone surgery. Unfortunately, it has also been used as an adulterant in illegal drugs, making it a dangerous drug that can cause fatal overdoses. Fentanyl was approved by the FDA in 1968 and is estimated to cause 11 deaths in Canada each day.

Effectiveness

How Actiq Affects PatientsFentanyl is a strong painkiller that activates opioid receptors in the body and is effective for several hours at a time. It can be habit-forming and should not be taken with alcohol or sedative medications.
How Actiq works in the bodyFentanyl binds to opioid receptors, blocking nerve signals and reducing pain. It does this by attaching to G-proteins, which turn off enzymes that control how much calcium enters a cell. This causes the cell to become more negatively charged, stopping nerve activity and reducing pain.

When to interrupt dosage

Actiq Toxicity & Overdose RiskThe toxic dose for fentanyl in rats is 2.91mg/kg when injected and 18mg/kg when taken orally. Actiq for Breakthrough Pain in Opioid Tolerant Patients
This medication is a true godsend for me. I have chronic back pain, and there are days when the level of pain is so high that my oral pain medication doesn't even make a dent. This breakthrough medication has helped me on those days, and I don't know what I would do without it.

Actiq for Breakthrough Pain in Opioid Tolerant Patients
The lollipop worked great for me, but I was unaware of the damage it was doing to my teeth. I've lost at least eight teeth and have had to spend a lot of money on dental bills (even with insurance). My insurance company stopped covering it because I don't have cancer, but nothing else has worked as well for me.

Actiq for Breakthrough Pain in Opioid Tolerant Patients
I had been using this medication for five years before stopped. I did it the right way and weaned myself off gradually, so I didn't experience any withdrawal symptoms. However, now that I've been off of the medication for almost three months, my pain has gotten worse again. Now I need to find a new doctor in the area who will prescribe this medication for me. My quality of life has decreased significantly since stopping this medication, and I am desperate for help.

I've heard that people can die from mixing Actiq and Xanax. Is this true?

Actiq for Breakthrough Pain in Opioid Tolerant Patients
This is an incredibly effective treatment, especially when used with duragesic patches. I was taking three 600mcg suckers a day as needed, and it's the only thing that touches the breakthrough pain that is just intolerable. However, you've got to have really good insurance because this stuff is $1280 for a box of 30 (that's what they bill our med plan-I copay $10). Stay away from oxycontin and suggest this instead; my pain management doctor says very few plans cover it however.

I've been using Actiq for a while now, and it's great for when I need quick relief from pain. It's expensive, but if you can swing it, I recommend giving it a try.
