What is Yasmin

Drospirenone

The Generic name of this drug

Treatment Summary

Drospirenone is a synthetic progestin used in combination with ethinyl estradiol or estetrol as an oral contraceptive therapy. It is also used to treat acne and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). There is some concern that drospirenone may increase the risk of venous thromboembolism; however, studies are conflicting and the FDA has concluded that the risk remains unclear. Generally, the risk of venous thromboembolism from using drospirenone is lower than the risk during pregnancy and postpartum.

Effectiveness

How Yasmin Affects Patients

Drospirenone prevents pregnancy by blocking ovulation. It may also help with acne and excess hair growth. When taken in combination with ethinyl estradiol, it has been shown to lower the levels of certain fats (lipids) in the blood. Since it is similar to natural progesterone, it is thought to cause fewer side effects such as breast tenderness and mood swings. However, drospirenone may increase the risk of developing blood clots, heart attack, or stroke. Smokers should not take this drug and those at risk of high potassium levels should avoid it as well.

How Yasmin works in the body

Drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol work together to prevent pregnancy in several ways. They stop the release of hormones that trigger ovulation, creating a barrier to fertilization. They also make cervical mucus thicker and harder for sperm to pass through, and make it harder for a fertilized egg to implant itself. Drospirenone also has some anti-androgenic effects, blocking the effects of male hormones and helping to treat acne and hirsutism. It also reduces swelling in sebaceous follicles which can help with acne.

I would not recommend this pill to anyone. It killed my best friend by causing severe blood clots and internal bleeding.

Yasmin for Birth Control

I was on this pill for seven years and I was very happy with it. The problems only appeared after I stopped taking the pill - PCOS & depression. I almost killed myself because of the overwhelming emotions, and having difficulty to get pregnant. I'm shocked nobody warned me of this side effect before, and so many women actually went through the same depression issue after the pill. If you have to use it, don't use it continuously for long periods of time.

This pill did what it was supposed to while I took it. However, soon after going off the pill I started losing a lot of hair, which has still not returned to normal six months later. Just wanted to give a warning to other girls considering this treatment.

Unfortunately, this medication made me really hungry all the time. As a result, I gained four kilograms in just three months. I was also constantly craving sugary and fatty foods, which isn't great for my health. On the plus side, it didn't have any negative effect on my skin.

Yasmin for Birth Control

I had some really intolerable mood swings while taking the first pack of this medication. My period also started during the active pills, which was very inconvenient. I'm currently on my second pack and have been spotting for a few days. I've also been feeling nauseous in the morning. Overall, I would not recommend this pill to anyone.

Yasmin for Birth Control

I had a stroke at only 17 years old after starting this pill, even though there's no history of strokes in my family. Be aware that this is a possible side effect. I also started having headaches 9 months before the stroke occurred; however, they went away as soon as I stopped taking the pill.

Yasmin for Disease of Ovaries with Cysts

Threw me into a deep depression. The pill should not be the first option for women when dealing with PCOS/ acne/ period problems, etc. There are so many other medicines or natural remedies to assist with everything; it’s a shame the health system just throws the pill at women who are struggling and calls it a day.

Sculptra + Restylane for Post-Menopausal Skin Concerns

40 - 65
Female
Montreal, Canada

The post-menopausal state is marked by a sharp decline in estrogen, leading to significant structural and functional changes in the skin, including collagen loss, dryness, thinning, and reduced elasticity. To address these concerns, aesthetic injectables products such as Sculptra® Aesthetic (poly-L-lactic-acid \[PLLA- SCA\]) and Restylane Skinboosters®\[HASBV\] (small-particle hyaluronic acid - SP-HA) can be used. PLLA-SCA stimulates collagen production via cellular activation (biostimulator), gradually improving dermal structure. HASBV enhances hydration, elasticity, and skin texture when injected under the skin. Considering that hydration and laxity represent the primary aesthetic concerns in this patient population. Targeted treatment with SP-HA (HASBV) to improve hydration and PLLA-SCA to address laxity have been shown to produce significant clinical outcomes by directly addressing these key dermal deficiencies. This approach forms the basis of the current study.

Lidocaine for Pain Control in Birth Control

18 - 50
Female
La Jolla, CA

The goal of this research study is to learn more about how different uses of a numbing medication might affect pain levels while getting an IUD placed. The investigators are also studying participants opinions of their clinicians' empathy. The investigators are inviting patients who arrive at their clinic visit seeking an IUD. Usually, at University of California, San Diego (UCSD), for patients who have never delivered a baby, clinicians use a buffered paracervical block for before IUD placement. The purpose of this research study is to investigate whether a "buffered" (2 cc of sodium bicarbonate, 18 cc of 1% lidocaine) paracervical block (numbing medication given on both sides of the cervix) is effective in reducing pain during IUD placement in individuals with prior C-sections, the difference between buffered and unbuffered for nulliparous patients, and whether a medicated gel reduces pain with the paracervical block.

HAPPI Software for Birth Control Access

18+
All Sexes
Del Mar, CA

The goal of this clinical trial is to learn if use of the HAPPI software can improve pharmacist-provided birth control services. The main questions it aims to answer are: 1. Does the HAPPI software make it easier for pharmacists to provide birth control services in their pharmacy? 2. Does the HAPPI software make it easier for patients to access birth control? Researchers will compare pharmacists' implementation and patients' access when using the HAPPI software and when not using the HAPPI software to see if the software improves implementation and access. Participants will include pharmacists and patients. Pharmacists will be asked to provide birth control services as normal while using the HAPPI software. Patients will be asked to receive birth control services from a pharmacist as normal, while using the HAPPI software.

Estradiol and Elagolix for Menopause

42 - 64
Female
University Park, PA

The frequency and severity of heat waves has increased in the last decades. Older adults (over 65 years) have impaired responses to heat stress making them at increased risk for adverse events. Previous heat waves report that women over 65 experience worse health outcomes than any other age group and age matched men. Aging and reproductive hormones, specifically estrogen, independently alter responses to heat stress. However, the combined effects of low estrogen following menopause and aging on the response to heat stress are unknown. In this study, the investigators will identify the role of estrogen in pre and post menopausal women on thermoregulatory responses to heat stress.
