How Avc Affects PatientsSulfanilamide is an antibiotic that works by blocking the growth of certain bacteria. It is effective against many types of bacteria, but some strains are resistant. Sulfanilamide is usually taken orally and is absorbed quickly, but it is difficult to give it through other methods since it is an alkaline substance that can irritate tissues. It is found in many parts of the body, including joint and eye fluids, and can also be found in high amounts in the fluid around the brain, though it is not used to treat meningitis anymore. The antibiotic effects of sulfanilamide are blocked if there is pus present

How Avc works in the bodySulfanilamide interferes with the ability of bacteria to make an essential nutrient, folic acid. It does this by blocking an enzyme called dihydropteroate synthetase from using para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) to make folic acid. Without this enzyme, bacteria are unable to reproduce.
